    Default Sammy or Dave?

Growing up i fell in love with the orginal VH loved everything about the band, since they were from my area at the time made me like them even more. Enter Sammy Hagar, I was driving on the 210 fwy in pasadena and heard dreams come on the radio, and that voice was no other then Sammy, since then I have liked VH music with Sam more then Dave, so Im saying Sammy hail to the Red Rocker for making VH a better band!!!!!

I was fortunate to see them live with both back in the day. DLR on the 1984 tour and Sammy on the 5150 tour. I enjoyed both to be honest. Dave is the better front man but Sammy is the better musician and singer. I like them both for what they were to be honest.

Same experience here and I couldn't agree more. I love all things VH but Sammy is by far the better musician.

Although I'll always think of the original line up as Van Halen, I think Sammy is a better singer and brought a totally different light to the band.

Thankyou for saving me some time

DLR is a great singer (Yankee Rose, anyone?) but compared to Hagar? Nah.

Respect both guys for what and when they did it. Sammy's been around longer, probably was one of their heroes and still has it. Loved him since Montrose.

Those who say Dave is the better frontman have never seen Sammy live.

I find it hard to really choose between the two, just like what Dawgkikker said. Van Halen as a band have been usually great from the get-go from when they first started recording to now (mind you, like anyone else, they've had a couple of forgettable albums over time). For me though, they've been pretty consistent with either Sammy or Diamond Dave.

Put it this way, in the days of having cassette decks in your car, the two VH albums that had equal play (as soon one was finished, out it popped and the next was immediately popped in) were "1984" and "5150"....I loved those albums, especially when I got into trying to figure out Alex's drumming (and failing badly, I may add!). Still do.

Seemed to me, the band had an entirely different focus between the two. DLR has a voice and style that has more character and charisma, IMO. Almost an Acid Jazz thing. I feel their music in his era was a more sophomoric "party boy" rock aimed toward the teen/college group. The overlying theme was drugs, sex & rock-n-roll. Sammy gave them an air of seriousness, sophistication and legitimacy to there music....much more deserving of their talents as musicians. I like DLR, but Sammy has "soul" and is a true musician. He was respected for his work before he joined. After DLR left, his solo career went.....heck, Zi don't even remember his solo stuff. He tried to sell himself with the dazzle-dazzle and videos of bikini-clad girls, but he had nothing of substance. It's a shame, because I really think he's capable of some great vocals. Heck, in today's market, he could switch to Country and probably make it big....re-invent himself, if you will.

Sammy. That opinion may have been the product of my father's subtle propaganda over the years lol, growing up and listening to VH, but I love Sammy. An outstandingly talented vocalist, that just sits so well with Van Halen!

I've never seen any of them live, I'm going off videos and what I know of both.

DLR is a natural entertainer and so is Sammy.
