just my $0.02...
Crash/rides are like all-season tires.
They do the job, but they're not very good at any season.
YMMV
I tend to just use cymbals how i see fit, i think the category stamped on it is mearly a suggestion, i've used some mad combinations of things if i thought they sounded good and quite regularly crash my 20" K custom and have used a 14 bottom aax hat as a ride a few times. A cymbal stamped up as a crash/ride might not do what it says but it'll be useful to someone for something.

DW drums and Paiste cymbals.
Hmm...John Bonham had no problem crashing the heck out of his 24" 2oo2 Paiste ride cymbal. Too him it was a crash/ride when needed. and he made it sound good.... Just sayin'
9 out of 10 people addicted to brake fluid can't stop!
The Sabian HHX groove ride is pretty good crashed and a good ride, and I know some people like Tomash Haake has a 22" Legacy heavy ride as his main crash. There's also a drummer on youtube Troy Wright who has a few rides that he uses as crashes. They sound wicked in his videos.
Don't you hate it when a sentence doesn't end the way you octopus?

I have a very powerful main ride, which is just to much sometimes, so I bought an 18" crash/ride and love it. Rides at a lower volume and "lighter" if you know what I mean and though it is not my main crash, I do use it and it is powerful with excellent sustain. You are right John Bonham had no issues crashing that big 24" 2002 (Listen to No Quarter) and Jason used 2 Zil k crash/rides as his crashes for the Celebration Day concert. Good enough for the Bonham family, then good enough for me!
Just checked out an interview with Jason and they were 2 21" crash/rides for the Celebration Day Concert.
I think the world of Jason, not only as a drummer, but as a person and have thought about writing a piece on him for the forum. Cymbal wise, during the CD Concert, I only thought he was let down by 1 cymbal, his 24" K Thin Ride. This is obviously an excellent cymbal, but it just lacked the power of the 24" 2002 John used. But all of that could have been due to the mikes, the mixing or whatever else, who knows. By the way, I read an interview with one of John's old drum rechs and he said John also used a crash/ride on occassion.
The Omni is THE ONLY true crash/ride.

Sweeeeeeeet Ride!
I've never used a crash/ride until my current band. It's okay but prefer separate cymbals. Bought an older Zildjian c/r for this band and it ended up cracking. Have a 20" Meinl crash and just ride that now when the parts come around. Not sold on double duty cymbals

It's like trying to mix a hi-hat and china.....Wait what if they had those?
Happy Drumming!

Nope just not right Ride is a ride . crash is a crash Just ask my car
I'd imagine it'd depend on the specific cymbals involved and the style of the drummer. I'm sure someone has tried it though. Maybe with something like the Zildjian Trashformer? Alone those are very china-ish, stacked on something else they make it very trashy too...
One more time I need to throw in there.... I love crash rides.
In fact 90% of the time my live setup is just two crash rides!
