I have a crash/ride and a ride. The crash/ride is really situational. It washes too much to play certain music. Its hard to play with some metal songs.

I agree with Ricard..my belief is they are separate sounds..do we all crash our rides at times..yes...I speak for myself and this action on my part is mostly...error..sort of...when I was young...long long time ago..I had one good cymbal..a Zildjian 20" ride...and a POS crash...so crashing the ride sounded better..so I did..but maybe that is why it cracked after 2-3 yrs..so bad It was tossed.
Enjoy the Music!

I've not heard many I like either, but the Sabian Omni isn't bad. But I like separate cymbals too.
I am using Sabian 21" bash crash/ride. Love it! Would like to have a 24" though.
A crash/ride is kinda like a VCR/DVD player. In order to achieve both benefits, they are each instead lacking their full potential in order to accommodate both options.

I'll wash ride my 18" AAX dark crash but I won't crash my ride. Wolvie said it best and I'm not willing to compromise on my ride so it can become crashable.
ok...AGAIN GRAMPS HAS HIS "SITUATIONAL OPINION"
i was addicted to zildjian A CUSTOMS (THXS VINNIE) WIF VIC FIRTH NYLON TIP WOOD STICKS.....THEN....i got permanent nerve entrapment in right hand...could stand vibration of wood up arm...went to AHEAD ANTI VIBE sticks (now using "crossroads" not "blackies"...
da cymbal sounds changed wif dat stick,,,,it would "pang"instead of "ping"...so i searched...matching cymbal sounds & tones to stick characteristics,,,found SABIAN B8 cheap... loved it then i bought & traded many ....until....
I MET A 20.5" CHAD SMITH SABIAN AAX EXPLOSION CRASH....IT NOW IS MY MAIN RIDE CYMBAL & CRASH ON RT HAND SIDE...GOT RID OF "a customs" now i use stuff people
cant comprehend....15" bottom of ZILDJIAN HIHATS as crash/ride...or PAISTE ALPHA 18"

I've got an 18" Zildjian K Crash/Ride that I use solely as a crash. I love it's sound in just certain situations, but when that situation comes up, it's awesome - like when I want a descending tone, I'll go 16" A Custom, 18" A Custom Fast Crash, and 18" K Crash/Ride. I wouldn't call it my go to cymbal, but it gives me something else in the arsenal.

Another reason I would never "crash" a ride cymbal with regularity is that the thicker the cymbal, the greater the possibility of it cracking due to it's own mass, particularly because of it's thickness. The strike wave has a harder time going through the thickness of the cymbal and fatigues the metal instead.

As I'm not a heavy player I find my 18" Signature Full Crash does a decent wash ride for the odd indie tune, but otherwise riding is limited to my Zildjian K (which also does a decent crash on the odd occasion!).
I'm currently exploring the possibility of a Dream Bliss 22" ride though as an alternative, splashier ride sound, depending on the gig.

The only cymbal I really think sounds good for both is a 20" Sabian SR2 ride I own. The stick sound is actually very clear closer to the bell, however it is not super cutting. It just doesn't have the volume to cut through a large band very well. The bell does, which is a strange combination - great rock-type bell with a mellow but articulate ride sound. Very strange. It makes a great low crash as well, but I don't crash it that often.
I use a sweet ride. I have two other crashes set up currently, and I don't use it like I do with only one crash right now, but it gives a good loud crash sound and is a good ride. I would love to pick up a Sabian Bash ride. I played one and thought it was awesome.
Omni all the way
Sabian!!!
My 20" Dream Contact crash/ride is probably the most versatile cymbal I own. For pure "ping," nothing I've ever heard beats a K Custom Dry ride. But it necessitates another cymbal for crashing, and sometimes you just want a minimalist setup.

Crash/ride cymbals I have heard have never impressed me. However, I have three rides, all Zildjian, on my kit that are used as crashes just as much as rides:
19" Armand "Beautiful Baby" Ride
21" A Custom 20th Anniversary Ride
20" K Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride
In fact, the first two are the two nicest-sounding cymbals I have heard, period. The K Pre-Aged makes a better crash than it does a ride, if you ask me! These are all relatively lightweight rides, so the concern of breakage because of thickness isn't there. I would never treat my 22" A Ping as a crash because it is much thicker and just sounds awful when crashed.
So it really comes down to the individual cymbal. If I were ever looking for another cymbal to use as both a crash and ride, though, I would not turn to a crash/ride cymbal; I'd find a ride that sounds good as a crash. Seems to be the best way to go.
My kit: OCDP Custom drums, Zildjian cymbals, Tama hardware, Evans heads, Pro-Mark drumsticks, Roland electronics, LP aux percussion, Roc-N-Soc throne, Shure mics
A cymbal is a cymbal. Hit it. Sometimes I'm playing with un-amplified acoustic guitars and I'll ride on a splash or overturned hat cymbal. Haven't had the drum police arrest me yet!
Playing concerts with full amplification...different matter. Stick to ride and crash for best results.
all the best...
