Default Catalina Maple vs. Pdp Concept Maple

Hey all, I'm in the market for an intermediate level maple kit, and the two that have come to my attention are the Pdp Concept and the Gretsch Catalina Maple.

I've had a chance to try out the Pdp and it sounded nice, but I haven't tried the Gretsch yet. Can anyone who has had experience with the kits offer some advice?

Below is a link to a review of the Concept maple, with my thoughts posted in there as well. I love mine. I know little about the Gretsch kit.

I like them both, but the Concept kit to me is the better sounding kit and it definitely has the better sounding snare. The Catalina kit is more warm and mellow, but the PDP kit has more punch and I like the tone better. They both can be made to sound really good, but I'd get the PDP.... Plus I don't like the 5 lug system on the smaller toms.

As most people around here know, I am a big fan of the Catalina Maple kits. I have one, and I have been very happy with it. That being said, I think either of these kits would be a good buy. When I was moving to an intermediate kit, I narrowed it down to the Sonor 3007 and the Gretsch Catalina Maple. I really agonized over the final decision of which way to go, but I was leaning toward the Sonor kit based on the finish. When I was ready to buy, the Catalina Maple was available, and the Sonor was out of stock, so I got the Catalina Maple (one week later, the Sonor became available again). My point is that I could have gone either way and been happy with my choice. I have never regretted playing my Catalina Maples, and I am sure that whichever way you go, you will be happy, too.

I have to echo what Pastor Bob has written here. I love my Catalina Maples and have no regrets for buying them. Great drums for the price.

You might want to check out Mapex Meridian Maples as well. I just got a 20" kick kit and it's a great set. Between the PDP and Gretsch it's probably a toss up based on personal taste (since I looked at those also).
