    Default 24" Kick Drum Tuning..

    Newb here.. Hi guys!

I bought a used DW performance series kit with 2 18x24" kick drums. They had really old heads on them so I replaced them with Aquarian SKII's and Aquarian Regulators for the resos...no padding in the drums themselves..
I'm using DW5000 pedals with wood beaters and falam slams on the heads to protect them. I want to get a nice cannon like punch out of them but it seems like no matter how I tune them I get a plastic-y slap. I tried my batter at about 77 and the reso at 92 using the iDrumTech app on my iphone. Seems like I've tried all kinds of different tuning and I'm just not getting to that happy place.

If you guys have any recommendations I'd love to hear them.. TIA

I think you need to lose the wood beater. That is where you.re getting the plastic (hard) sound.

    all the best...

I use a Tune-Bot to tune my 22" kick to 65 hz batter and 80 reso. Give that a try.

Dont tune to a number tune to a sound. Plasticy slap means the head is tuned too loose. Tune your batter up and your reso down.

Watch John Good's video on his tuning techniques. He uses one finger in the center of the head and tightens to just above wrinkle. I have done this and my bass sounds great. Nice boomy sound. As northern redneck said, plasticy means loose or uneven tension. Good luck.

And especially this. Put some pillows in there too, buy a big fat felt beater, tune your batter a little tighter, and your reso a little looser and marvel at the cannon you've created. The wood beater is all attack, zero boom.

I have the stock DW beaters and the hourglass pillows around here somewhere. So maybe tune the batter up and reso down= both the same tension-ish? I had always heard batter lower than reso but I'll try it. Damn..these 24's should be punching but they're not. I'm looking for this..

I know it's mic'ed and processed but it has to sound good to begin with..

Thanks guys! I'll work on this this weekend.

The ones with a plastic as well as a felt side? That would be great. And welcome to DC by the way. The best drumming chat room I've found so far on the net.
