I suggest have a look at large diaphragm usb condenser mics or a large diaphragm condenser and a cheep i/o audio interface
plus a half decent mic stand
ok thanks

Check out a company called MXL. I have a large condenser mic of theirs and it sounds great and was less than $100. They have a USB for under $100 as well (MXL USB-006). Put it about 5 feet in front of your kit 5 feet up and point it at the front bass drum head. You shouls get a really decent sound with that.
I'm going to echo what the others said, but it depends on your budget and what room you're recording in.
Have you considered something handheld like a Zoom H4N or H2? The H2N runs about $180 while the H4N runs around $280 brand new. They record really well for handheld recorders.
Otherwise what I would do is get a cheap interface (something like a Tascam US-1800), pick up some cheap mics off craigslist or whatever (SM57's? B52 for kick?) and do it that way. In the long run it might be a bit more expensive but you'll thank yourself for the flexibility and sound quality.
Sometimes I just turn on the recorder on my mp3 player.
I second the HN4. Just put it about 5ft in front of the kit and press record. If your drums sound good in the room they will sound good on the Zoom.
The condensor Shane posted would be my second choice, get the usb version, set it up just like the Zoom and hit record.
I've been using the h4n for all of my YouTube covers for the past 6 months. It has 2 xlr inputs if you end up with some more microphones. I use it as an overhead then close mic my kick and snare. Works great. The newer h6 has 4 inputs, but you are getting into the $400 range.
so what's the budget?
i don't realy have a budget but lower the cost with best quality would be preferred.

You should figure out a budget. But, if you just want some nice stereo tracks, it's hard to go wrong with a Zoom pocket recorder. They record really well. These videos are recorded with a zoom q3, which is similar to the h4n, but it has the ability to record crappy video. If you want a video recorder, get the q3 hd. It's not as sensitive to low light situations, but, you still wanna record during the daytime. My q3 also has an integrated usb cable, so you can always plug into a computer to transfer files. I can't say if the h4n has this.

Good thread here. I have a mixer and mics for all the drums. Is there a way you can incorporate that into recording to a computer ?

I am running a Samson 8-kit through an ART MX-821 line mixer into my PA, which has RCA jacks for record out. From there everything runs through a Roland Cakewalk interface to the USB port on my laptop I now not only have the ability to record, but also a great setup for live sound. Total cost of mics, stands, cables, and mixer was around 750 bucks, and the interface was 40, and it has a 1/4" line input if you only want to record the drums!
I love my Zoom stuff.
I have an H2 and Q3 Vid recorder. Both take excellent recordings that are easily editable.

I vote for the Zoom H4N, I have it and it's great!
You can record decent quality with a regular usb desktop mic. The mic would have to be in front of the kit at least 6-10ft away, lower your input volume in the sound settings to 1 or 2 to prevent harshness and clipping. You can EQ in Garageband afterwards.
You may have slightly flat toms and kick sound but that depends on your tuning and heads.
I did this for a couple of my earlier videos and though it wasn't pro quality, it was ok for just reviewing my progress.
Be happy to PM you a link as an example

Im going out on a limb here - but have you considered a Zoom Q4 video recorder? Our band uses one for recording our live recordings and the sound quality is excellent. The price runs about $300.00 bucks give or take at most of the major on-line music concerns as well as chain stores like GC and Sam Ash. After you record, plug it into your USB port on the comp and transfer from camera to comp. You will be amazed at the sound quality as well as the video seems good, at least from the standpoint that we do not play on a "dark stage" . Just another idea for you to consider, if the cost isnt prohibitive.
