    Practice, what's that?!

Just kidding. Lately I haven't had any time to spend with my drums....oh wait, I did get 15 minutes on Friday...the 4th.

Before that, whatever time I had I would cut in half...the first half I would work on the basic rudiments, and then the last part I would try to play along with simple songs...at this point mainly just to practice timing.

Some sweet guy made a video for me, and his methods was much better than my teacher's. I saw improvement in the couple of times I was able to get on the kit.

As of late, my practice routine consists of trying to figure out why the guitar player isn't there.

Seriously though, when I practice I spend more time playing time than anything else.

Spend an hour or 2 playing along to our favorite songs with my bassist son. When by myself I try to spend some time on rudiments until I become bored to tears. Then I play along to more songs. Never less than an hour nearly every day.

Good song, not quite what I meant though. What I mean is just playing the particular beat that I'm working on and trying to keep things consistant without giving in to the temptation to play a fill every 2nd or 4th measure.

For me it's just rudiments around the kit and trying to come up with fills. Stuff like that.

After 18 years I still suck.

In the hour of daily practice I get I spend half of the time playing songs (which includes learning new songs) and the other half playing rudiments. Sometimes I throw a little jam time in it to try create cool beats and fills.

Playing rudiments isn't an indicator of sucking - even the drummers we would consider as the best in the world do it daily.

    Uh, what?

I didn't say or indicate playing rudiments means any one drummer sucks.

I thought I was pretty clear that after playing and practicing rudiments for 18 years, that " I still suck." Meaning Me, myself, and I.

    It was sarcasm anyway.

    Hi,
I warm up with some stuff, usually what I am doing with the band, for about 30 mins, then I go to my homework, and play through my pieces and do some rudiments, that will take about another 30 mins, if I have time after that, I will go back and if there is anything I need to learn for band practise, I will do that, or maybe have another blow out and play along to stuff on my I-pod, that's it really. well that works for me, on a weekend, and I have more time I usually play for about 4 hours. :D the worst thing about holidays is I can only take my sticks!

drumming on my couch no less than an hour or two a day: doubles, paradiddles, single's, fingers and wrists. also playing to whats on the tv.

beyond that rehearsal with the band, generally 3 or four hours a week.

I think about what songs Im gonna learn, then I realise my kit is all the way down in the basement, and I really dont want to walk that far. So I grab a beer and turn on the game instead.

It really depends on what is going on. If I'm "guest drumming", I spend most of the time learning songs. If my band is in a "let's add some songs to the list" mode.....I'm learning songs. Even during those times, I try to spend at least half an hour on rudiments and technique and just simply trying to maintain some semblance of actually having chops (harder to do the older you get).

When not learning songs, most of the practice time is spent on rudiments and technique. Also, working of different grooves and fills. For me, just playing along to songs, even though it can be a quite useful practice tool, is a little boring.

I just started doing rudiments, singles, doubles, paradiddles, and drags on the pad every day for about 45 minutes before getting on the kit, but after 5 days my left (weak) forearm on top is sore as all get out. and I have not done anything for 3 days? This is why I never can stick to a routine, I don;t feel I am tense at all but my left hand thumb and forearm always start hurting when I try a routine.. Maybe I should just play through it?

I don't have a routine. Don't play at all at home anymore. Band practice....we just jam and drink beer. Maybe run through a set if we have a gig coming up.

Drinking beer. Sometimes really the only reason to go to band practice.
