I sent the old Slingy shell off to be wrapped.
When it is time to put it all back together, I will put new snare wires on it.

What options do I have and what wires would you put on it ???

It is a standard 5.5 X 14 Slingerland snare from 1964 -- up until now, it has always had a painted or natural finish.
I am using the original strainer which requires snare cord, not nylon straps.

As it looked last week :

I too have been wondering about snare wires. I have always used 20 strand , but am now wanting to try something different. Was thinking of going to à higher wire count.

My very first snare was a Olympic by Premier which is an entry level metal snare. A few years ago I wanted to see how good I could make it sound and I bought one of the Grover Pro System snare wires. There are different brightnesses of wires and you can go with whatever sound you want. I forget which one I got but it made my drum sound significantly better. It's when I came to the conclusion that good snares and a good head can compensate for a mediocre shell.

Hmmm.... make your own if you have the tools and time/skill. Or buy DW puresound i think.

My local drummer friends tell me the Puresound Custom Pro Series is a great product.
I was at first thinking the traditional 20-strand but my snare bed looks like it would accomodate the wider 30-strand.
Is there a reason to favor either one of those choices ?

    puresounds here too.

usually I will cut them down a bit ..either the middle two or the outer 4 depending on how open I want to have the particular snare.

I've tried the Puresound 30 Snappies and wasn't very happy with it. I think I'm going to mess with it again tonight and I'll check back in. Maybe something was off when I installed them.
