Nice mate! I really wanna grab one of these hey. Nice price too
Well, for years now I've been happy playing and learning Middle Eastern rhythms on my Turkish doumbek, which has a copper body and plastic head. That one certainly has a great low sounding bass or 'doum' sound. But I felt it was time to get a bit of a different sounding drum. So imagine my surprise when as I was trawling through Gumtree over here that a lady wanted to get rid of a great sounding Egyptian darabuka....for AU$40! Even better....it was one of those that are decorated with tiles all the way around...so I just had to get this one after I finished teaching here! Sure, it has a few small tiles here and there missing, but these are an insignificant distraction.

Beautiful drum mate.
Sweet! I love the feel of those flush rim/head drums.
Nice looking drum.
Nice one. I had one of the Meinl Darbukas for a while. Aluminum shell and a synthetic head. Very resonant bass and it was only like $25. I ended up selling it though. They're really cool little drums.
Ooh that's pretty!

Nice looking darabuka! I'll bet it's really easy on the hands, as Shane noted. What size is the head?

Two different sort of drums and sounds, Marty. A djembe usually has way more bass than a darabuka or dumbek, although there are some Middle Eastern drums that are a bit bassy too. Finger techniques are different too, although a bass sound with your hand and a high cracking sound with the fingers on the edge of the head is common to both styles of playing.
The Egyptians and Lebanese often call the darbuka a tabla, which can get confusing if you're new to hand drums, because Indians also call a pair of differently tuned drums 'tablas' as well! Here's one of the masters of Egyptian hand drumming, Hossam Ramzy...

What a beautiful piece. I refer to it as art but then again aren't most instruments works of art? I would argue yes.
Way to go man. Very pretty/good looking piece.

Lol....sorry man.....when I put the second video URL up, forgot to put the last little bracket at the end, so you probably only saw the first video and not the second. The second one has Hossam Ramzy playing....that's a perfect example of what the darabuka sounds like! Scroll up and have a listen now.

^ Thanks PB, it's something I tell my students and fellow musos to do....go out there, be inquisitive and learn everything you can, as you're only here for a certain amount of time. Sure I'm dabbling in other instruments too, but decades on, I can still say I'll be a drummer until my days are over. With the best seat in the house on any gig, I might add.

So, now that you've had this for a while, how does it compare to your Turkish drum? I'd imagine the feel of playing it would be a little different, and probably the sound as well. I've searched for some sort of comparison video online but as there are so many different materials used to make these types of drums, I didn't get very far.
that's a beautiful drum!
