I have been building drums with a really cheap POS lathe. One that is heavy duty enough to handle a 22" shell will cost over $1500 and is still not really suited to the job 100%. So after seeing some neat versions from bowl turners (guys who make wood salad bowls) I got to thinking, hey I could build my own. So with a budget of about $50 and about 5 hours in the shop, it is ready for a test run.
I invented this threaded centering device. Yet to be tested, but it works in my brain.
I cut and glued three shells last night, soon will see if I create or destroy. African mahogany with some walnut, Birdseye maple, and a Rosewood.

Great invention Sig but I pray that the threated bolts hold that shell in place man or she going to fly lol You should build a guide around or slide a empty 45 gallon drum over it in case something goes awry. Can't wait to hear from you how it works. Good luck.
Awesome. Tuned in on this one...
On my bucket list is to one day make a complete kit out of mesquite staves.
Nice job! Is that motor mount made from wood? If you want variable speed, you can buy a cheap KB Electronics motor controller (VFD) for around $100. Check out The Surplus Center on the Internet. They have all kinds of bearings, sheaves, motors, controls and stuff like that at pretty cheap prices. They're here in Lincoln, NE but they do millions of dollars in Internet sales every year. If you need any help with that kind of stuff, let me know. That's what I do for a living.

Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!
"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham
Thanks, I did found a variable speed device made for a router for $45. The sales guy said it would probably burn out the motor on the lathe as it is specifically designed for a router motor. I am not sure of the electical engineering on that.
Anyhow, the lathe works even better than I could have hoped. The mahogany shell that I mocked up last night was done with an odd number and size of staves which made it a little egg shaped by about 1/4". Also, 10 hours dry time in a cold garage is not adequate, so I really expected this shell to grenade all over the shop. BAM, it turned down in about 10 minutes and ran so smoothly I could not even feel the out of roundness.
Proof in the pictures, it happened.

Great idea. Nice work on the lathe and the shell. Adjusting and correcting for out-of-roundness shouldn't be difficult I would think.
Nice work. I always enjoy your posts.

Wow!! This is awsome!
That's awesome Signia Fan!!! Hope it works well for you.
I agree Texdrumr!
I dont have a lathe, but if I did...
But I did inquire about having one made for me a few years ago.
The guy said he'd do it if I supplied the wood and it would cost me around $400.
Yeah........ not gonna happen.
I have plenty of Mesquite but I'm NOT gonna pay that much when I'm not even sure how it would sound.
It WOULD be a Beautiful snare that is for sure!
