"And what would they do to my snare?"
Screw it up!
So I'm thinking about drilling vents in my snare, but should I drill say 4 2inch holes or 8 7/16 holes? And what would they do to my snare?

What type of snare?

You will prolly loose a lot of body and presence , plus no doubt will sound like a ballon stretched over a pancake ..
Just cause spawn did it doesn't make it right but maybe they sound like arse with out the vents guess we will never know
I dont know what it will do but Im considering doing it.
Take a minute to think about that statement.
Probably a bad idea. Seems like there is no real objective here for doing it, so why do it?
Just shoot it with a gun for extra mojo.

Maybe try out a vented snare at one of your local drum stores before you make up your mind. Are you looking at this as your main or primary snare, or as an alternative to your main one? Because if this is your only snare and you vent it, then decide you don't like that sound, well, you'll be stuck with it. Unless you know how to cut wood to plug those holes and know how to finish off the surfaces. But that's another thing altogether.

Its one of my main drums. I flip flop with my 13x7 and a 14x5. but my 13x7 has a lot of residual ring and I don't care for that. but I love the sound of it.

Wasn't there a post on this forum where they showed odd looking snares with holes all over the shells. Not sure if they were factory made or custom.
I think DW makes a snare that has adjustable vent holes. There is a lever on the side to either open or close them. The drum sounded really dry when the vents were open.
luke - I'd think about it first. Once ya drill them, there's no turning back.
EDIT: Yes, DW makes a collector's snare named the Acoustic EQ.

My main snare drum has one air vent and sounds like God. If you want yours to sound different or better you should buy a different or better drum.

Don't do it Most Man. have gotten what is needed from that snare. But if you just want to experiment well then go for it . But you did say this was your main snare. I would buy a cheap snare to try first.
