Default I'm really digging having a tom to the left of my hats

So, I finally got to have a practice with our group last night. I posted threads regarding playing with back pain in addition to "show me your two floor toms" so that I could figure out what to do. I finally decided to do this format:

This is a pic from Dodeska:

I'm REALLY digging this layout. First, I can't believe how comfortable this is. I don't have to twist at all to play.

I'm also thinking about mounting my 10" rack tom so I can have a full 5-piece kit along with an additional tom off to the side. There are a few movements that'll take some practice, but overall, it's been an easier-than-I-thought transition.

I'll try to take some pics.

I'm glad the picture helped. Nice idea on the 10" tom. Good luck with it all.

I'm also definitely a big fan of a Tom to my left. 3 of my 5 kits have an additional tom on the left. Very convenient

The more the merrier. It opens up many different opportunities and more creativity. Next you need a popcorn snare on the left.

I used to have a PP popcorn, but I got rid of it. I really wish that I wouldn't have.

The only thing that matters with a setup is being ergonomic.

I love throwing my 16" tom next to the hats. It makes it setup like a 1 up 1 down feel but still provides the ability add the dynamic generosity of the bigger toms.

i tried putting one tom off that side briefly, and i could not find a way to play it comfortably. i'm sure i could with practice, but i'm really feeling my 2up 2down setup right now.

That's pretty cool. Eventually, I'd like to do the same, but with a snare, which is obviously more common. But having a tom there is an interesting idea.

This is an excellent idea. A quick question though, is it a tom you play all the time i.e... 14", 16", or 18"? I have thought about this after reading your other post. I don't usually play with both of the snares, so twisting from one to the other would be a little different (have to get used to it).

    Thanks.

I love having floor toms on both sides too! I had used 2 16x16s for years, and just this month went to 16 on the left and 18 on the right with the new kit. Aside from not having to twist, being able to play open handed and ambidextrous is awesome. I also have hats on both sides, and soon will have a left side ride.

Love it, I been thinking of trying it as well with an extra snare. Either popcorn or another same size snare tightened really tight with the snares off to add some latin type flavor.

I just got a China cymbal that I love but have no idea where I am going to put it yet.. Maybe I need to start a show me your china set up thread : )

Yes the tom placement is perfect for that song. I was having to do a lot of twisting before with the more traditional set up. When I would get home from church after mornings of playing that song 3 times (1 rehearsal, 2 performances), I could literally barely walk. I'm doing much better now.

My Pork Pie drums were made back when there was only one model (before the Little Squealer line and all that). Each drum has Bill Detamore's signature and handwritten serial numbers. The serial numbers on the toms, kick, and snare are all sequential. It's a custom kit that had to be ordered that I happened to catch on evilbay.

The cymbals are all A custom except for the hats:

    Sabian AA hats
    Zildjian A Custom
    14" fast crash
    10" splash
    15" fast crash
    20" ride

    Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks! You should hear them live through the PA at church. On a rare occasion, I'll get to hear someone else play them, and they sound incredible. I couldn't be happier.
