WOW..........what an appropriate reply to an offer so presumptuous...........sickening.
Gretsch USA & Zildjian(What Else Would I Ever Need ?)
It depends.
This ad is from a small restaurant that might be a barely profitable business.
I have occasionally played these gigs. Suppose the restaurant is close to home, say 1 mile away, and I've been there before and like the place and like the people there. My risk is small because it is close to home. I might get a nice meal. If the gig is on a Tuesday afternoon - nobody books me on a Tuesday afternoon anyway so here is a way for me to get some practice in front of a live audience. I can add the gig to my advertised schedule and it makes me appear more in demand. If I can put out a tip jar then I might play for two hours, return with $ 40 and dinner. I can advertise this gig in my email newsletter and other advertising. I might give business cards to people. I arrive early so I can visit the neighboring businesses, invite them to my show and leave promotional items - printed key rings or ink pens or such. The people that I meet can lead to another gig.
I go with my microphone, minimal drum kit and play along with CD's. Just sing along with Willie Nelson, Bob Marley, UB40 ("Red Red Wine" is a good song at restaurants).
But it is important to keep the risk small - the gig close to home - and to be ready to follow additional opportunities if they appear.
At least you get publicity.
If they are in downtown Vancouver, I doubt they are small fry as rent there is insanely expensive I hear. Most likely looking for a free meal..............
What a great response.
This went around several years ago. I think the location changes based on where it gets posted.
It is great whether it is real or not.
Last summer, someone posted an add locally here on CL looking for a band to play at a car show in Texas outside in July - no pay. Great experience of course. There were a fair number of musicians that replied to the posting in....let me say, a negative way.
That was a perfect reply.

Geez, I've had my fair share of these gigs. I've been doing this too long because now if I'm approached do something like this, here's how the conversation usually goes:
Person trying to book me: "Come out and play! We can't pay you anything, but it'll be great exposure!"
Me: "Great exposure to what? The elements? To getting ripped off? Tell me exactly how this will help me..."
His reaction:
