Mike Portnoy is a much more rounded player than Alder. Portnoy is a expert of the instrument, Alder does the same things every other mainstream death metal band is doing.

Portnoy is certainly not overrated. He's accomplished some pretty awesome things in his time that aren't noticed by alot of people today because of their musical preference. If anything he's underrated while Alder is being given too much credit.

Has anyone got Portnoy's most recent DVD, it really is amazing. Theres hours and hours of footage with loads of different angles and some great playing.
It got a 5 star review in Rhythm Magazine aswell.

Chris Alder. Lamb of God isn't the same as other mainstream death metal bands... he's actually pretty good among drummers, pay more attention next time you hear them.

Not as familiar with Chris's playing but Mike Portnoy is great! Lots of great ideas, chops, energy, etc.

I'm not implying that Chris Alder is totally mainstream, but he hasn't done quite as many spectacular things with his talent as Portnoy has.

I've gotta go with pretty much everyone else so far. Mike Portnoy is the better drummer. He certainly has more influence.
