    Good one...........

    After trying everything out there for a few years, I have exclusively used 5B nylon tip for 30 years.
    Regal Tip at first; now Vic Virth.
    Perfect weight and durability............and, like others mention here, they make the ride cymbal sing.

    Would someone please start a thread about what the numbers and the letters refer to? I have no idea.

    Short course in stick designations:
    Numbers refer to diameters (in decimals):
    2B=.63"
    5A=.56" 5B=.59"
    7A=.54"
    etc.

    Lengths tend to be standard per letter model for all manufacturers,ie.:5A VF length same as 5A Vater, same as 5A Regal Tip.
    Used to be that "A" for Orchestra/Jazz/Acoustic settings, "B" for Band and "S" for Street (Marching)

    Wood, tried nylon once but the tips came off the sticks, didn't care for that.

    I used both for a very long time. In the late nineties I decided that I didn't care for sound of nylon on ride cymbals, especially playing softer pieces. I have not owned any nylon tipped sticks for about fifteen years.

    Now I've come to find the wood tips produce more of the wood click or clack sound I love on the ride when held loosely. It's likely I'm the only one who can hear this sound which mostly emanates from the butt end of the stick but I love the sound. I think mics can pick it up too under certain circumstances.

    Anyone know the sound I'm talking about?
    I know exactly what you're talking about. That's why I've always used wood tip sticks, and also its a very natural feeling with wood. I use this word a lot but to me it's a organic sound and feel.

    Started with nylon, eventually migrated to wood, haven't looked back. I do still own a couple pairs of nylon tip sticks though.

    Back when there were no internet forums, no drum magazines and dinosaurs rules the earth we bought whatever sticks were available. My local shop had Ludwig wood tips, Regal Tips with nylon tips and some Pro Marks, which were wood as well.

    I tried all that were available and played a mix of Regal tips and Pro Marks for a while. As I moved around the country I got to try various other manufacturer's sticks. Eventually I found Vic Firth sticks, settled on wood tips and haven't felt the need for anything else.

    Vic Firth wood tips most of the time. There was no option for the carbon fiber, which I use if I want a bit more ping on the ride. I've had a nylon tip come off and hit the bass player. He wasn't too happy about that.

    Nylon tip. I like the way they sound on my ride. More articulate on the cymbals than wood tips. Also, I don't like it when a wooden tip chips away and creates a sharp edge that can damage my heads. And, the nylon tips always outlast the life of the stick, so the sound coming off my cymbals stay consistent throughout the life of the sticks.

    My little FYI...These Zildjians "round" wood tips I've been using this winter are
    really holding up like new. The other tear drop wood tips didn't hold up long.

    I'm a wood tip guy. I tried a pair of nylon tipped stick early on, and I still have them, but I prefer the sound of wood.

    I only use wood tips because I like the stick response---and because nylon leaves white marks on my black suede heads---it got so bad I had to replace my snare head after a month because there was so much buildup it started to sound like crap Vater 5B for me

    I played those things for one practice and got blisters so bad I had to tape my fingers for week.

    Never played them again.
