It is unacceptable for all bands. Every town has a few of these type of venues. What they do is book touring bands on the low end of the spectrum of popularity, yet still have a draw. Those bands book tours and ask for certain amount of money. That money is shared with their openers (which is 1 to two bands). At this point, if the band draws a few hundred people the venue will barely break even. Beer sales help make up for that somewhat. The venue then gets some local acts to compete selling tickets for the show, telling the bands "this is a great opportunity and exposure for your band!". The band that sells the most tickets gets to open for the opener. Which means they get to play in front of 20 people instead of 6. Most of the crowds show up late because they know the venue opens at 6 to let the 3 bands play extremely short sets while people slowly file into the venue, ignoring the bands most of the time until the headliners hit the stage.

So the venue has enlisted local bands to make more money for them, treat them like crap and share none of the profit with those bands for their work doing what the venue promoter should have been doing. It is a sham, and another case of music business BS in a long line up to the very top. If there is money to be made, you can bet there are people like this to make sure that none of it goes to the artist.

Back to the original subject: Racks

I like the small ninja-like racks that only go over the bass drum. Just makes it easy for me to set my crashes, toms and splashes without stand legs all over the place.

Personally, I really like racks for live use, because you can tear down your setup in the practice space, leave all the parts exactly where they were, throw it in the back of the van/truck/car/whatever, put it on stage, throw all the pieces back on it and adjust your hi-hat, snare and kick and you're in business within minutes. Always takes me forever to get everything back to the way I want it when I'm using stands...

That being said, I sold my rack years ago when I stopped playing out and started using a smaller kit. My kit never leaves my studio and it takes up less space with two stands on each side, rather than a big rack.

You guys that use stands....don't you tape off your drum rug for live use? I can get my kit set up as quickly as I can carry it to stage. And so can anyone helping me. My rug is taped and marked for every piece of gear.

    check it out...

Ive owned a rack they look cool and work very well but I've would never tour with one. Every venue is different especially state to state. In CA they don't have time for it and I've seen many of drummers get yelled at by the venue cause they are taking to much time. I know not everyone does and all you guys can do it super fast but I see more problems than positives especially due to the hectic situations when you are loading in and out during a show. The only band that gets time is the opener

I've been setting mine up for fifty years now. I think by this time I know where everything goes.

Same here. No markings or tape needed.

As much as I gig, I can set my kit up in complete darkness and it would be the same.

I've experimented with both on my DWs. I liked the idea, and if this kit grows any bigger I may just break down and pick up a DW rack. However, I like the versatility of it as far as making it bigger or smaller depending on the venue. Haven't decided yet.

    With rack...

Scott, that drum set is absolutely gorgeous. If the day comes when you feel like replacing it, let me know before you do anything.

Lol, you would get the friend price...but it wouldn't be cheap even then. You know what they're worth. Maybe I'll get rid of them if Remo ever stops making 23" kick heads.

Yeah. I see what you mean. I figure at this point in the game a rack would be kinda senseless for me. OTOH...f I was just starting out and wanted to have all the stuff available today that can be attached to a drum set, then I would go for it.

    all the best...

I use both rack and stands, whenever I feel the situation call for it. If I play live with my metal band, the stage is big enough and we are headlining, I usually bring my big doublebass kit with the rack. Even though it's more then I really need to lug around, the visual appeal of that kit, in that style of music, wins every time (at least in me and my bandmates opinion).

For the regular pub gig (with my cover band), I usually feel that my Gibraltar rack with curved legs (and two small sidebars/wings) saves a lot of floorspace compared to stands. It usually takes a bit longer to set up though, so if we're in a hurry I bring normal cymbal stands instead.

For sure. You've got to tape up your rug and mark your stands. It makes setting up a breeze. I will admit that I'm somewhat intrigued by the Gibralter stealth rack.
