Default Chuck Silverman, Latin Drumming Expert and Teacher, Passed Away Today

I know many people on DrumChat either studied with or has heard of Chuck Silverman, the latin drumming expert and educator, author of Latin Funk connection and other books on the subject.

Today Chuck passed away, at this time no details are available. I just wanted to start a thread for the many people that knew Chuck and loved him to celebrate his playing, his passion, and his legacy.

Much love for a lifetime educator and proponent of latin drumming!

Saw it on Facebook earlier, was announced by Pat Petrillo. Man, I so wanted to go overseas to study with Chuck, used to pore over so many articles of his in Modern Drummer and checked out videos as such (the next best thing to actually having the man himself right next to you on the kit). To me he was one of the greats of drum instruction.

RIP Mr Silverman, keep the clavé going up there in the Big Sky, amigo!

Had several conversations with him by phone. Smart guy and talented drummer. He wasn't that old and the whole thing seems a bit surreal.

This was posted on the zildjian website:

Zildjian Mourns the Loss of Longtime Artist and Friend, Chuck Silverman

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of long time Artist, Chuck Silverman who died suddenly May 1, 2014. A friend to so many of us here, Chuck was part of the Musician’s Institute family of Educators for many years. Zildjian would like to express our sincere condolences to his loved ones, friends, co-workers and students.

Known worldwide for his DVDs, books, articles and travels to Cuba and Brazil, Chuck Silverman brought over 40 years of drumming and percussion experience to the Drum Program at MI. Chuck’s books Practical Applications 1, 2 and 3 were included in Modern Drummer’s list of “Best Drum Books of All Time.” As a teacher, he passed along the importance of reading and developing a relaxed and purposeful playing style, as well as the techniques he gained from his studies with snare drum masters Murray Spivack and Richard Wilson.

Internationally known as a specialist in applying Afro-Caribbean rhythms to the drum set, Chuck developed a style of learning and performing on the drum set which helped his students to develop command and control of their instrument. He traveled all over the world teaching thousands of drummers not only about traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms like Songo, Mambo, and Samba, but also sharing his ideas about developing a more creative approach to learning the drum set by using these rhythms as a rhythmic foundation.

His ideas about the drum set, drums, and drumming were always expanding with the main focus always being how to have more fun playing drums. His Workshops were interactive, where the audience found themselves as part of the performance in an exciting way to learn about drums and feel the power of rhythm.

Chuck was passionate about preserving and documenting the elder statesman of Cuban Rumba, and had been working tirelessly on a film project he called the “Keepers of the Flame - Cuban Folkoric Drumming Traditions”.

Chuck’s passing is a great loss to the entire Drumming Community, especially in the US, Cuba and Brazil, where he had so many friends from the many trips he took over the years. His memory and his style will live on in the thousands of students who were fortunate enough to study with him during his 40 year career. Godspeed Chuck, you will be sorely missed.
