Buddy Rich could work a hi-hat better than anybody I've ever seen.
Hey all,
I am way, way, way far away from needing to concentrate on any specific part of drumming (I am still learning the most basic of beats and fills) but I am wondering if you can recommend any specific players who have, in your opinion, particularly great chops on the high hat (either sticking or foot control) and use of the ride cymbal. It seems someone mentioned Stewart Copeland as a particularly adept high hat player, and I've seen a video of Steve Smith doing some very showy high hat work, but can anyone point to who does a great job, generally, with the hats? And, same goes for the ride cymbal. In all of my beginning lessons, even in books and the like, it seems the ride cymbal gets shorted in terms of emphasis, except, possibly, in jazz, where I've seen more mention of it than other places.
So, any players that stand out in your minds? Particular performances that blow your mind with these two kit pieces?

Watch this. It's Jojo Mayer on the hihat and ride:
the isolated drum track is on YT but I can't find one that doesn't have the f-bomb said at the beginning so here is just the song. It's the first thing that came to mind with fancy hi hat and ride work.

I've always been drawn to Carter Beauford's broken hi-hat patterns in Dave's songs.
