    Default elbow sticking out

I have a problem, and my drum teacher tells me this, that when I start playing my elbows slowly rise. After playing for like 5 straight minutes, my elbows are way up high. Not only does it just look weird, but it really effects my playing. I dont know how that developed, because I never did that. I just started doing that before. Its something that I dont notice and I dont think about... until their sticking up so high I cant play!! So how can I correct it? PLEASE I need suggestions!!!

um....the best thing to do is to just make a conscious effort not to do it...it's hard to think about other things when trying to think about playing but u gotta do it...if u force yourself to think of it then u'll also improve your mind and your ability to pay attention to people you are playing with and it'll get alot easier if you just for yourself to do it

You might want to take a good look at how your drums are set up too. You might have them at angles that cause you to do it, or maybe your cymbals are too far away and your having to reach too far to get to them which causes you to keep your arms up so you can get to them faster. I bet if you brought everything 1" closer to you, you would notice you probably don't lift your arms as much.

Also, how do you hold your sticks? That might have something to do with it too.

    Good luck!

    thanks for the advice..

utopia: i tried that today, but it is soo hard to think about it and concentrate on playing at the same time. it didnt work out for me. maybe i should try a little sticky note or something and put it on the tom lol

    1drumbum: thanks ill try that
i dont think its the way i hold my sticks though, but I will move my things closer in. come to think of it, they are set up differently, cuz i took it apart to move it to a stage for a school band concert. my sister set my set up at home after, and so things are farther away from me. thats about the time i started noticing my elbows rising, so maybe your right! Thanks a lot!!

Start a regime of practising with a friend standing behind you with a water gun, and have them squirt you in the back of the head every time your elbows get out of line!
