Default Low budget engineering and test

I've been vacillating endlessly about internal vs external kick micing and came up with little $8 hardware store internal mic set-up to test my Beta 52 this weekend. I have a fellow drummer who is also a sound engineer running the board and recording at our gig tomorrow night to finally quell my struggle. There is 1mm thick rubber sheet sandwiched between two "H" brackets and the mic is isolated from the bracket by rubber grommets top and bottom. I will be aiming the mic where the head meets the shell.

    Let the giggles commence:

Looks really interesting, but I guarantee you are inhibiting shell resonance.

And the Kelly Shu system doesn't? Same principal, and less than 1/5th the price for experimental purposes.

How would this inhibit resonance? There don't appear to be any extra holes in the shell. I suppose, in theory, the slight extra weight on the drum might reduce resonance but doubt it would be anything close to be perceptible to mere mortal ears.

I like the idea. Definitely save money over the Shu system.

is the Shu system all plastic? Not sure if exposed metal or hard plastics would alter frequencies or not but that seems like one difference. If there was a way to make it out of wood then the sound would be more absorbing rather then bouncing off the metal and plastic. But like mentioned nobody I know has any kind of alien hearing able to differentiate those kinds of freq's

Yours seems better than the Shu because it's laying flat.

The mic is mounted in the same orientation for both, just one is upside down.

The Shu can be mounted upright, upside down, flat, or at any number of angles. It also has a sliding adjustment to fine tune mic placement.

None of these DIY or Shu options affect shell resonance. Not in the least.

I've always muffled my bass drum, never really liked the "Boooooooiiiing" sound..................so resonance wouldn't matter to me.

Let us know how the test goes.

22"x18" bass drum with Beta 57 mounted 8 inches from the batter head pointed at the confluence of head and shell. Evans EMAD batter, DW Ported (6 hole) Resonant Head, Yamaha Flying Dragon with a vintage Ludwig round felt beater.

    Testing results:

Sound check (bass drum only) through board using headphones, no internal muffling of drum yielded a "boing" effect. DW pillow installed. Clean response with no extraneous noise from the microphone mount whatsoever.

Full PA test (including (2) 15" subs) with no EQ adjustments subs showed great low end thud with little discernible "click" (which I prefer). Minor EQ and the mid range blossomed with warm resonance, and a tight thud you could feel in your chest.

Small venue PA test with no subs still gave solid mid-low range warmth, with a crisp thud.

All in all very positive results. No noise from the DIY mount. The sound was very similar to just inside Kick-port mounted mic. and the ease of not carrying around mic and stand, nor worrying about someone kicking it out of position pretty much seals the deal. Ill definitely run with this for a while.
