    Default Who likes deep snares?

Been playing this one for about a month now. 14 x 8 deep, 8-lug, mahogany snare with triple flange hoops. Came stock with 42 stand wires. Tuned low, this thing gives a deep, fat, crunchy Don Henley type sound. The tuning range is broad so I can crank it up and get a higher-pitched crack but with a rounder, fuller bodied sound to it.

The current snare sound trend is for a drier, higher pitched crack but is there anyone else out there like me that digs the deep fat sound of an 8" snare?

I don't have one but from what i hear on youtube i think i would like one they sound really nice. I would save the small cracking dry snares as my side snare.

14x8" mahogany? Damn, that thing must rumble. I've been moving towards deeper snares. I got a 14x8" maple MPX snare that matched my set in color, then swapped on the Merdidian lugs to make it match. I haven't had a chance to really play it though.

Nice snare. I picked up a 14" x 8" Ludwig Supralite a couple of months ago. Steel snare. It wakes the dead and gets the neighborhood dogs barking. I have a 42 strand not being used at the moment. Think I'll throw it on the Supra and see what havoc I can create. Thanks for the idea!

It can rumble, although I have it tuned up a bit from its lowest. Everything about this drum is designed to go low and fat- the depth, the wood, the number and type of lugs, Remo Emperor head.

Not a very good pic but this was my old 8 x 14 chrome wrap Tama Granstar. I played it a lot. The lugs had a tendency to break in the middle. The one piece Granny lugs had an hourglass shape.

I have a black wrap 7 x 14 Tama Artstar with the freedom lugs in the lineup now. Don't know what happened to the GS, but wish I still had it.

    I own three deep snares:

Taye Maple with Wood Hoops 14x7

Mapex Maple Black Panther Phat Bob 14x7

DW Performance Series Chrome Over Steel 14x8

I have Evans Genera Drys on all three for a warm/fat sound.

    I love deep snares!

My 2 go to snares are my 14x6.5 Ludwig Pre-serial Brass, and my 14x6 Yamaha Anton Fig (w/wood hoops)

    I also have a 13x7 Pork Pie.

I'd REALLY like to get something around a 14x8, hopefully a wood shell.

You don't see many used 14x8s on the market. Seems that when someone gets one, they tend to hang on to it.

    That's an awesome looking snare!

As an aside, what are those fan-looking things by the legs of the snare stand?

I prefer deeper snares and among mine I have:
14 x 8" Pearl Birch DLX Custom Parallel Action Strainer 1982 (made for Phil Collins)
14 x 8" Pearl Birch DLX 1984 (with Premier marching hoop)
    14 x 8" Gretsch Rosewood Power Snare (1985)

I also had a 13 x 7" Mapex Blaster Maple Walnut Snare which was very nice, but I sold it with the Blaster kit.

I hardly get to play them because they're so dang loud, but I own a 14x10 Maple DW collectors, 14x8 Birch DW collectors, and a 14x8 DW performance chrome/steel. I love the sound, but I'm about keeping that stage volume lower if I can.

The only two constants I have are DW and Zildjian.
