    Default big project

heres a little teaser of the project i'm undertaking on my Pearl Exports. i'm not sure what to call it, because its not a "restoration" because they aren't old drums but they do need a little repair, and i'm also doing a few unnecessary modifications.

anyways, i'll just leave this here:
Pearl Export EX matte purple with black hardware 10, 13, 14, 22

    14" Zildjian Constantinople hats
    22" Zildjian Constantinople ride

16" A. Zildjian Thin Crash (now a wall decoration)
    18" A. Zildjian Thin Crash

thanks for the interest! got started on the most unnecessary part today

and yeah i'm a little obsessive compulsive about some things... haha its a blessing and a curse because while i have very good attention to detail when i need to, i also have it for everything else.

    heres another teaser:

Those Pearl badges come right off, you might have better luck temporarily removing them instead of taping them off.

thats what i thought, but when i took the screws out and tried to remove them i found they are glued on i started to get a razor blade underneath one of them and it just started to bend (super thin metal) so instead of risking ruining them i just taped it off. wasn't too hard, just put tape over it and cut around it with a razor.

I know this is a little late info for this project... but FYI for future projects and/or anyone else that comes across this issue...

I removed a glued on badge by using the cut out of a single ply bass drum port hole. I just kept rocking it back and forth between the badge and shell until it worked its way through... shell and badge were unscathed.

hey, sorry everybody! been super busy the last few weeks so i haven't been on here, had to divert my time and money towards my other hobbies but i've made a ton of progress! its taken a lot longer then i expected, the most of which was due to the custom paint job i know its not going to be everyone's cup o' tea but i really like how it turned out. i know i kinda kept everyone in the dark about what my plans really were for these, and i hope you all enjoy the results! i have the 12rt, 16ft, and 22bd done so i can finally play again! i've been playing on just my steel snare, my spare bass drum and my cymbals for weeks now and i can't wait to get my 4 piece set up and bang on them.

i was a bit nervous as i started to sand down my bearing edges :O but i was very careful and diligent and my work paid off big time. these drums have never sounded better or tuned easier. no more nasty overtones :D

i know a few people on here were a little skeptical when i said that my bearing edges had been so badly beaten up by stick damage, but after sanding them down they just have a great sound that i've never been able to get before.

    i'll have pictures tomorrow!

Alright! as promised, here are some pictures of my finished product! i still have 4 drums to do to finish the kit, but i'm more then happy playing a 4 piece so i did my favorite 2 toms first.

i know not everyone is gonna like the paint job but i really like it. being all black with black hardware, they kinda disappeared when the room was dark and i wanted something a little more flashy.

heres what the raw shells look like now that the paint is dry and the tape peeled off. keep in mind the color isn't exact on the screen like it is to the eye.

heres my sanding rig for the bearing edges. 220 grit finishing paper stuck to 3/8" glass on a towel on a very flat table. it worked very well. went pretty fast, i definitely wouldn't use anything rougher then 220 grit.

here they are with all the hardware and the heads on :D i think the black hardware really stands out nicely against the design. breaks up some of the lines.

heres the kit set up with no cymbals so you can see the paint

and here is the kit, back together in my reorganized practice space with all my (not so) shiny zildjian constantinople glory!

enjoy!!! and thanks for lookin! when all the drums are done there will be a timelapse video of the whole project for anyone interested :D
