Can you post a pic or link to what you are referring?
Curiosity has finally gotten the best of me about a specific piece of hardware on his sets dating back to probably Grace Under Pressure. Usually not seen in regular promotional pictures. There are two of these items located on his set. One by the front hi hat, usually only seen when looking at the kit from the front. 2nd one is in the same location on the electronic kit. The item is metal and plated the same color as all other hardware. Its squarish , i would guess approx 3" high, 3" wide , and 4" long. Does anyone have a clue as to what this is?? I see no musical quality to this item. Is it some kind of fan to blow on him?
Thanks. Look fwd to answers.
I performed some internet searches and this was the best picture I could come up with. I tend to agree it looks like a squirrel cage fan assembly.

Bingo...
I watched a video of his drum tech setting up his R30 kit and explaining that they placed fans so that his hands would stay dry and he wouldn't drop any sticks.
Ok this was the first time i tried doing a link so i hope this worked ok. If not just please follow the above address. Andrew has posted a good picture of Neil's R30 kit and the item in question is in good view. The item is clearly visible below the upper right electronic drum pad and next to the mounted 18" floor tom.
In the past few days I have watched the Time Machine 2011 concert and could see what looked like small regular looking fans around his kit. Like 8" in diameter fans. So this continues to intruige me for some stupid reason. Lol. Ive seen it on his kits back to at least 1984 and the Grace Under Pressure kit.
Maybe it is indeed a fan that this item is. Hope someone takes a look at above "link" / address.
Thanks
Bish,
That is a good pic as well with the item right at the bottom of the pic. I am leaning towards it being a fan. Albeit a funky looking squirrel cage fan.
Can't wait to see Neil's next tour kit. He does have beautiful kits especially the Time Machine kit.
Yup. Steam punk motif fans. And are gold plated to boot.

I do concur with everyone that these are fans on the set. However NOT steampunk motif per se' due to the fact he has used these on his sets since at least 1984. Though they do lend themselves very well to the steampunk idea.
As for the steampunk set itself, what can one say about it other then it is a true piece of art! The kit is just amazing with details upon details. Kit should definitely go down as one of the most iconic kits of all time. Does anyone know if the kit ever went on tour by itself like they did with the R30 kit or if it is on display somewhere?
That was a good one Pearlman. Here's another I found that seems to show it well.
