If brushes and bundle sticks aren't giving you the tone you want, try a pair of Vic Firth SD5 Echo sticks. I got a pair for a gig I played this last week that required a lot of volume control. The balance is funny, so I can't say I love the way they feel, but they really do help with volume. You can play really articulate patterns at low volume with those.

Muffle the drums down, stuff the kick with a blanket, put tissue and tape on the batter and resos of your toms and snare. Also try hanging some curtains up in the room to contain some of the sound bouncing around.
Let me preface by saying I certainly don't mean to come across as rude, etc...
Playing light with a fine touch takes a specific technique. Having gear that accommodates light playing is an added benefit for sure. The proper type of gear set up is is especially helpful in the type of room you are in.
Vic Firth SD4 Combos may be of help. If need be people sand down the tips as well to help lighten the tone.
I like what NR said about trying to treat the room in some way. Some heavy curtains will help.
Having played drums for 20 years in churches, I know what this is like. The first thing I'd do is buy some "cool rods":
They are the smallest "hot rods" made (from what I know). I'd also look into getting smaller cymbals as well if budget allows. The action on them is pretty nice (they actually bounce around on a hi hat the way sticks do).
If the curtains and cool rods don't work, buy a djembe.
Edit: Also, one thing to keep in mind is that you can't go into this sort of setting thinking that you are a rock star (I'm not implying you are doing this; I'm speaking from experience ). You are going to have to play softer.
Also, the longer you play there, the more the congregation will get used to having a drum kit (but it takes time). Over time, you will be able to "open up" a little more. On average, it takes seven years to change the culture of your average church. Be patient, and it will pay off...hopefully!

You could also get a pack of these drum mutes. I have used them and they work but your drums may not sound so good but they will be quieter lol. Under 50 bucks is a good buy. Good luck
Ya drums are loud...whats with all the "i need quiet drum" threads....drums are loud!!!!
Palm up, man that would be hard on the knuckles lol
palm up as in like jazz style and palm down like rock

alter the room if you can, if not muffle the bass drum and play with hot rods. and learn how to play well lightly.
You mentioned playing "palm up" - are you playing both sticks that way?
Here's a thought no one has mentioned yet; pick up an E-kit and an Amp designed for E-kits - - problem solved~ and you can play em with as much intensity as you normally would play an acoustic kit full tilt and with the twist of a knob, you can reduce your overall volume to what ever you need it to be. Buy a new E-kit or look for a good used one.
Just a suggestion~

I like what porkpieguy said...
I've played in churches for years and found that it's really about finding where you fit into the bigger picture of the worship team. Hotrods work, but they're no fun. You could also talk/pray with the other folks in the team about playing louder overall.
If you haven't made up your mind yet, I second (or third...) the Hot Rod (Cool Rod) recommendation. I have a pair of Hot Rods, and I am amazed at how much volume is reduced using these, especially the cymbals. Did you ever decide what to do?

Luke, are you kept in a totally separate space from the rest of the band, or is the whole band in this small brick room? If it's just you, then I cry, "Foul," because you are being expected to play along without direct connection with the band (worse than a drummer in the plexiglass "whale tank"). If it's the whole band, then you guys seriously need some room treatments to help keep the sound from bouncing around. Second, if it's the whole band in this situation, and you need to tone it down to their volume level, then an e-kit just might be your best option.

Sorry every one, I forgot my password. lol. We are trying out the hot rods and they seem to be working out. And no I am not the only one in the room its the entire band. So the room needs to be sound treated in my opinion. But they think it'll be to much work to do so sense we have to set up and tear down every Sunday.
