I thing non-drummers look at the other two mounted toms and think the snare drum should appear similar (up in the air). They don't have a concept of what a snare drum is. They're all just 'drums' to them, lol.
It would be an interesting experiment to get 25 laymen in a room (separately) and ask them to pick out the snare drum. How many do you think could do it?
