Thread: Naming

    Default Naming

I have kind of a strange question that borders on some level of mild insanity. Does anyone out there like to name their drums, cymbals, stands, rack, or anything like that? Like say if you form a sentimental connection with your instrument or gear, and you treat it like family? I call my kit Scarlet.

I don't think you're question is strange at all. All my things have names, including my instruments. All my guitars and basses have names, but I must say that I haven't yet decided on what to call my drum set. My naming goes beyond instruments. I'm probably crazy to reveal this, but I have a whole lot of stuffed animals that all have names. No one would believe me if I told them about this, but I figure as long as it doesn't bother anyone else, what I do is up to me. As you might imagine, I am very attached to all my things that have names, maybe moreso because of their names.

Definitely! My snare's name is Syd, my bass drum's name is Frank! When you name an instrument, it becomes a part of you. And without that part, you aren't whole!

    Thanks FlyByNight.

A pic of it with a kit. That's a 22" Zildjian ride to the left of it.

I haven't named anything else except calling my Speed King pedal a "Squeak King"

Haha love it! The Zildjian looks like a mid size crash next to Hoss. What stand are you using for it?

I believe it's one of those PDP boom stands I purchased awhile back that had 2 in a box (discounted price) called a "Boombox". It can be a straight or boom stand.

I was just wondering if a normal stand could support the weight of that ride. Thanks

Obviously, naming a guitar is not that off-the-wall.....especially if you are an accomplished musician like BB King (Lucile) or Willie (Trigger). Heck, Lucile and Trigger are celebrities in their own right. Naming a drum set, however, never crossed my mind.

I call my Taye kit "Cutie" and my cymbals as a collective "Pies", but to keep it simple I call the whole kit the Cutie-Pies.

Ummmm not I do not name my kits. But i guess it wouldn't be that weird, especially with sentimental attachment.

Never thought about naming my kit(s), but I will say that it's very common for guitar players (especially acoustic guitar players) to name their instruments.

Sure I do but always after girls, my Cajon is called "CJ" mostly because I was lazy and shortened "Cajon", my china cymbal is named "Allie" after a girl I dated who turned out to be really trashy(for the cymbal thats a good thing, the girl not so much), and my snare drum is named "Kenzie" after a girl I used to work with who was always giving me problems(it never tunes right) and once showed up to work drunk(I flipped my snare switch once and the snares broke and my reso head exploded) as an entire kit she's named "Pricilla".

I named my bongos when I was a silly teenager, when I got back into drums, I thought of naming my ekit, and no, I don't think it's a strange question, but it's hard because a drum kit has so many parts. Do you name your cymbals but not the drums? Logically, you should name your hardware, but that just seems kinda weird.

That being said, I do have my kitties, my kitty Kenzo, my two nephews, my Sonny Rollins autograph, my drum kit, when I get to play them more my cymbals will be as well, and until recently, my wife...
