That's the future right there. In another 10 to 20 years, many drummers will be showing up to the gig with only sticks and a computer. No drums needed!

I honestly thought this was a joke, until I googled it. Insanely cool, and affordable enough I might actually try it.

Interesting. But I wonder how you would do rolls or rimshots.

I suppose you could program a rimshot. And you know, phil rudd made a career of never playing any fills :D

I've been doing some research on this, and it looks like if you want to do rimshots you have to add another "drum" or add a sensitivity zone on a "drum" to your "set" and hit there instead, it seems pretty good at picking up rolls from some of the YouTube videos I've seen, it also supports multiple pedals.

It's not all good though the sensors on those drumsticks are apparently fragile and can break easily, but they only cost $10 to replace, a far cry from the $160 I spend just on drum-heads every year. Secondly, you have to have a "low light" environment to play it decently due to the fact it is using a PS3 camera with a very bright light on it(they recommend sunglasses) which might be an issue if you ever tried to gig with this. Also you have to have a decent graphics card to process the video from the camera, so it might not work well on a typical college computer if that's what you're looking at it for, and if you're buying a high end computer just for this I'd just recommend buying a mid range electronic set because it might run you that much. My last issue I've found based on reviews is that it has some difficulty picking up on the upper parts of the drumset like the crash cymbal, but even those reviews state that the parts it does pick up it picks up incredibly well and I think you might be able to fix it by putting the camera lower.

All that being said it is still really cool, but I'm just not quite sure if the Aerodrums have graduated from a novelty to being practical yet, and I won't know until I get my hands on one and try it for myself.

Might be interesting to play a song on Aerodrums at a gig. The audience might like it. The kids might like it.

Neat idea, but I'm not crazy about just hitting air.

No stick rebound = No feel = No thanks. What's the point
