Default best double pedal for speed (inexpensive)

I'm a musician, therefore, I'm usually broke or poor! I'm also the drummer of an Avenged Sevenfold tribute band and play on a kit with a single bass drum. Can't afford to upgrade to a double bass kit, so I need a double pedal. I'm using a Gibralter dual chain double pedal now, and I'm not sure if there's a better option for me to gain some speed, or if it's a matter of spring adjustment.

I can do some songs without a problem, or at least long enough to get through the measures without getting fatigued, but other songs I can't come close enough with what I have.

A few questions I have for those of you who know more about this sort of thing:

    Best double pedal for speed:

Chain, strap or belt drive? dual chain or single?
what brand runs smooth for speed that isn't $700?!

Is there something in the spring adjustment that I can do to create a faster response for what I need?

Is there anything with the batter head tension that would help me?

I am very much a heel up player. Right now, my springs are set half way and the beater sits 4-5" off the head at resting position.

Looking for any details, advice, suggestions, tips, tricks, etc.

    Thanks much everyone!

I have not tried this myself, but it sounded good in theory when I heard it. Instead of using a tighter spring to get the beater of the head faster, losen the spring and increase the tension on the batter head. This way the head is more responsible for the rebound and you don't have to work against the spring as hard when playing. I imagine that you would have to be careful not to bury the beater too much with this type of set up. Then again, if you're playing fast double bass you're probably allready trying to avoid that.
    Mmm... Saturns.

Its more about the player than the pedal.

Spiderjig posted a video in another thread, to a guy at a drum clinic explaining how sound guys can make a big difference. He also explains his double bass pedal and bass drum set up which was very revealing and interesting to me.
I recommend you watch it for some 3rd party, outside information.

It is mostly in the player. I say mostly because if the pedal doesn't feel right to you, then you might not be able to push past that. I've found the Gibraltar pedals I've tried to feel slow as well. Something you might want to consider, given your monetary limits, is looking for used gear. That can put those $700 pedals within budget.

Outside of that: practice. That's your biggest thing. I built my speed on some humble single chain Iron Cobra Jr pedals before I switched over to the fancy stuff. This type of drumming is more muscular endurance and nerve ending building than learning a skill.

but when I finally traded my stock Tama pedal for the Speed Cobra it improved my dubbles and off beats a bunch. So much better action, tweak settings and smooth light action.

    gotta say..

Take a look at the PDP DP502---or the Pearl P902 Powershifter (I have the pearl) Both are under 200 bucks (150 for the PDP, and 180 for the Pearl) Spending lots of money will not make your feet move any faster!

Pearl eliminator 2002c, still my favorites. Look for them used of course, but a mighty reliable pedal.
