My playing is getting so stale, I need some new inspiration. Maybe link some youtubes? Some notes, a stick pattern, anything!

There are tons of interesting patterns/groves in your head. You just need to coax them out.

I'm all set up to record so, what I like to do is lay down a simple bass line for backing, make it loop and just grove along with it, changing it up until I find something that feels right. Then I will record it so I don't forget

It's WAY more entertaining to me than just playing the rhythms solo.

If I were to teach drumming, this is the method I would use. Playing rudiments solo or to a click is ok....for about 5 minutes, but I find I can play them a LOT longer with a little bit of backing. Instead of feeling like a drone, you feel like you are actually composing or creating something.

If you've not learned the Purdie Shuffle yet, here's the best video I've found on how to play it. It took me 2-3 days, but I FINALLY got it. It's not clean, but I can play it:

The guy from Vans Drumming is an absolute goofball, but I love the way he plays and his fills he teaches.

Here's one that I've been working on, but I'm modifying it a little.

The beauty of today's recording programs is that you don't even have to actually play the bass or any other instrument.

Hell, if you can see the screen, you can put down tracks on your Iphone.

Vic Firth has these 15 second videos on Facebook of Joe Anydrummer doing different grooves and I've found a few of them really nice to learn. They may also be on their website but I haven't checked. Anyone can record one and send it in.
Life's too short to play the same solo twice. Improvise!

It's a joke. Fred Armison(sp?) is actually a halfway decent drummer. He made a few skits like this.

Sort of reminds me of the catchphrase for the game Othello:

One minute to learn. A lifetime to master.

I learned it two years ago, and I'm still working on getting it consistently clean.

Trying to do smooth paradiddles and the 5 stroke rolls is a challenge for me. Whenever things get stale, I use different phrasing of paradiddles and the 5 stroke roll around the kit to break up the routine. If I start to flail my hands around and loose time, I back off the click and start over. Yeah...not too exciting....

This is by far my favorite Bernard Purdie Groove. Taken from Memphis Soul Stew.
