I found this set at a local music store for $599.

Anyone have any clue if it's worth that?

Judging from that badge, my guess would be 1981 - 1986.
If that is true, those drums are in good shape.

I would find out about the shells made during the above timeline.

I’m thinking with no tom mount these drums have been refinished. Also a straight floor tom leg goes back to the 60’s. My first Slingerland kit in 64 had a floor tom with straight legs.

Silly question, but how do they sound? If they sound good, do they sound $599 good?

    That's about a 1967 Slingerland.
Black and brass badges. Torpedo T rods, Straight legs on the floor tom.
    all point to 1960's.
Toms look like 12 and 13" and the bass is more than likely a 20".
Virgin bass, My guess that this set at one time had another bass.
It would be listed in the Slingerland Catalog as a The "DUET" OUTFIT NO.40N
Would be three ply with rerings.
If that set looks as good as it does in the pictures. You better have that home for supper.
    That's a very good price.

    extremely impressive!

Only thing I knew to date it back was the side tom mount and straight bass drum legs as previously mentioned.

But yes those are beautiful drums. Looks like the start of a good drum joke in the first picture... so I Slingerland, Gretsch and DW walk into a drum shop right...

That side mount is for a L arm cymbal mount.

I like your thought of the joke in the making.

Your timeframe is more accurate given the floor tom legs and other tell-tale hardware.
The black/brass badges from '62-'70 look identical to the '81-'86 (at least to me).

They are so pristine that the mention of a re-finish is convincing; could be that the badges were replaced as well.

You are right on the same colored badges.

The 60's badges used a brass grommet, 80's used an aluminum grommet.
Also the serial number will tell the year.

    Yes.
Serial numbers on the Niles badges ran from 1962-1986.

What type of tom mount do you think was on the bass drum(if any) before it was re-finished? I do like the wrap job on it,even though I'm not a sparkle fan.

Based on the spring-button FT leg brackets with straight legs: mid 60's. Badges match that time period too. I think the kick has been modified to be a virgin. All maple with re-rings too, I bet. Nice re-wrap with hoop inserts.

Would have had a double clip mount if it was a 1967 set.
Set O Matic mount came out in late 1968.

I'm leaning to the rewrap also. If it was original someone took very good care of storing it.

Actually the tom leg bracket has T wingnuts. Visible in the last photo. My 64 kit came with the spring push button but I changed them out to the wingnut type because they slipped. A short lived idea.

In the picture of the bass drum (last pic) enlarge the pic and look to the right of the floor tom and you will see the T wingnut, follow the tom leg down to the bracket.

First picture also shows both mounts with a wing nut. Gotta look real close.
