Default 10 Best Drummers of All Time

You often see lists of the 10 best drummers in magazines and on blogs. Obviously some people value popularity more, some like chops and others like a deep groove and would rate them that way. This really isn't about what other people think. Who are the 10 best drummers of all time to YOU.

Remember the rules and no bashing other people's opinions. Keep it nice!

I know from working with Drum Bum through the years, that this forum is costly to run. All in addition to the expenses that come from running a business. Tom you're just stoking the fire with a question like this.

There are so many amazing drummers out there, I don't think I can pick a top 10. But my favorite drummer of all time is John Bonham.

There's no reason that in Drum Chat, of all places, we can't have this discussion. Those that can't be nice won't be allowed to participate.

Love John Bonham's playing. I was a late bloomer with him. Couldn't appreciate him as much in the early days but can now really see how he had a special kind of groove and sound. Amazing drummer!

Maybe not the best players of all time but players who've had an impact on me for one reason or another:

    Lars Ulrich
    Ringo
    Slim Jim Phantom
    Larry Mullen Jr.

    Some more technical guys:
    Chris Adler
    Neil Peart

Sorry, couldn't come up with a number 10.

    Edit:

I can't believe I didn't list Peter Criss the first time!

    Now that's 10.

I think the music they played is also important. Neil Peart is great, but Rush is not exactly music for everyone. I think a lot of the amazing Prog-rock drummers have this issue.

So drummers who played "main stream"music, my faves:

rich, bonzo, mitchell, jo jones, tony williams, elvin jones, zigaboo modeliste, ringo, brad wilk, chad smith (dont really like RHCP tho), and a bunch of the other guys mentioned above
    Yamaha DTX 500 module
Anatolian Kappadokia 14" Rock High Hats
    Sabian El Sabor 20" Ride
    Zildjian A 18" Crash Ride
    Istanbul Agop 16" Trash Hit
    1950's Zildjian 14" Splash/light crash
    Istanbul 8" Splash (pre 1997)
    Mapex Black Panther Steel Piccolo
    1965 Premier 3 piece 10, 16, 22

Very good point. I used to watch Simon Phillips and Phil Collins because simply listening to the bands they were in wasn't an option.

Oh man! So hard to narrow it down to 10. Here are my current top 10 favorite drummers, or drummers most influential to me:

    1) Vinnie Colaiuta
    2) Billy Cobham
    3) John Bonham
    4) Dave Elitch

    6) JoJo Mayer
    7) Tony Royster Jr.
    8) Jason McGerr
    9) Dave Grohl
    10) ?uestlove

Just writing this list I can think of about 20 more names that I feel I ought to include, but rules are rules.
