Default You Know You Love to Give Advice !

A good question for all you gigging drummers out there :

I told the story here recently of auditioning for a 2nd band.
They are going to be playing clubs and the set-list is currently composed of rock-dance-music more modern than I am used to playing.
Ordinarily, I would not be crazy about joining such a band (because I have done that routine for too many years) but I made an exception here because the other members possess very good musicianship and I simply love to play music with good players.

In order for a song to be added to our set-list it must meet three standards :
    1) Danceable
    2) Popular, and
    3) (most of all ) FUN !..........for both the audience and the band.

The current list is almost half complete and thus far, looks like this :

One Way or Another -- Middle of the Road
Message of Love -- Call Me
    She Sells Sanctuary
    Everytime I roll the Dice
    Follow You Down
    Hey Jealousy
    Twilight Zone
    Sweet Child of Mine
    Celebrity Skin
Are You Gonna Be My Girl
    You're No Good
    Chain of Fools
    The One I Love
    My Favorite Mistake
    If You Could Only See
    Venus
    Hurt So Good
    Mary Jane's Last Dance

So now I'm asking your advice.............when you play gigs with your band (past or present), which songs did you do that crowded the dance floor every time ???
Thank you in advance for your help.

We do several of the songs you already have on your list. I'd say Mustang Sally is the one that ALWAYS get people on the floor. 'Every time I roll the Dice' is also a good one for getting people up. 'Honkey Tonk Women' and 'Hoochie Coochie Man' are good ones too. I've noticed that almost any song with hard driving "straight 4" beat at moderate tempo (like previous examples) gets people dancing. I like to start songs with just me playing the bass drum hard in a straight 1-2-3-4 for several measures, then have the lead guitar jump in with a distorted riff......then just watch the people (especially girls) run to the dance floor. Doesn't matter what the song is. People seem to love that simple primitive beat. If you can keep the Chics on the dance floor, the guys stick around regardless.

"Too many crappy used drum stuff to list"

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

"Shout" is one I never seen fail on getting people on the floor.
"What I like about you" usually works pretty good also.

I was in a band once where the club owners made us stop playing it because stuff was getting broken. The crowd was so rowdy on that tune that they were getting up on the tables, slinging beer and basically just tearin' the place up!

Agree with almost all of the songs..............I'd add:

    Mony, Mony

    You really got me

It seems people are always dancing on the tables with those two.

Something from Foreigner or Journey might be good. Combined together there's probably 50 hits to choose from.

After playing with a few of these songs for a while in my music room, I came up with this 3-song "dance-rock" medley...............

    Starts with Kinks' YOU REALLY GOT ME...........first two verses, then the lead guitar ride;

Then into jungle drum beat on the floor toms and bass drum -- segue into the last half of Metallica's ENTER SANDMAN starting with the lyrics, "Hush little baby......."
.........then finish the song as written before going back into the jungle beat..........

slowly bringing up rhythm guitar volume, segue into van Halen's AINT TALKIN 'BOUT LOVE............play the entire song and put the big finish on it.

Have not heard the band try it yet but I think it will work well if everyone agrees.
