Default re-inventing my stage custom tom mounts

I have a late 90's yamaha stage custom set I bought new back then that I love. I'm not a fan of shell mounted tom mounts but I love the sound of my kit.I wanted to do something different to my mounts without drilling any new holes in my shells. My set was bought just before the YESS mounts came out,so this is what I did:Before=

And after= I painted the inside plate black and re-mounted to the female mount and plugged the center hole with a black plastic flat cap an installed with silicone and put peel & stick velcro felt on the outside one( also insalled cap on inside) I cut the male rod down to 2 3/4 in. Y.E.S.S. specs.I put rubber O rings against out side of shell

I can't see it making a difference in sound. The bracket is still connected to the shell. I think it would put more stress on the shell and may do damage in the long run by extending the mount away. You should of left the inside plate on Just sayin.

I agree with MCX Man. I would make a custom metal plate for the inside of the shell. That would give the strength needed as well as cover the hole at the same time. At a minimum, add some much larger flat washers on both sides. That's a lot of force cantilevered off the bolts. Having the rubber there allows the bolts to flex in the shell and "woller" out the holes. (That's an engineering term, LOL). I'd be afraid of them pulling through after some use. I do like your idea, however....nice job thinking outside the box!

don't need a plate.. just bigger washers to help distribute the pressure

If you make your own solid plate (no rod hole) you can cover the hole in the shell.....2 birds with one stone.

Agree with most. There's the higher risk of damage as well, should the drum be dropped or something.

    all the best...

I have the same kit, in black. What ever they did to make those drums, they sound great.
I have 2 other yamaha kits and a little ludwig. Out of the 4 kits, the late 1990's kit sounds the best. Kits come and go but that one is a keeper.

I see where you came from to get the rod out of the shell, but I used to have a 4 piece blue stage custom, and I found if you push the toms in as far as they go, it gives the most resonance.

I want to thank you all for the great feed back. I think I'm going to go with SpazApproved's idea and go with larger washers (fender washers). I don't want a large plate smothering the sound I think by putting fender washers on it should give it extra support.

One last note: I put the fender washers on the inside of shell, took the washers that were on the inside and put them on the outside between the rubber o-ring and spacer because it was bigger and more flat surface area for the rubber o-ring to flatten when tighten. That mount isn't going nowhere.

The less metal weighing the shell down, the better it sings. Lightening the load is a fantastic idea, however I would advise that without the interior bracket/plate the shell alone should not be your prime foundation. Metal is stronger than wood as a material, so in this instance it would make more sense to buy aftermarket isolation mounts. They are not only disposable and don't damage the drum, but take some of the stress off the shell which is what you want when you're after full resonation. Unless you have behind the lug suspension, iso mounts make the most sense.

I'll have to show a photo of my Yamaha Maple Custom... super heavy drum and it only uses two small points to mount. His setup it perfectly fine. Like a said just a bigger washer in the back for peace of mind

All I can say is we will have to wait and see what happens in the future once you start banging away. Plate or washers that is the question.

I had a Recording Custom set and a Maple Custom set, both of which used the new-at-the-time YESS mount with only two bolts attaching the tom mount to the shells. Both sets had suspended 16" "floor" toms mounted that way and neither showed any signs of distress over the years. If you've ever held a 16" Recording Custom tom, you will discover what "heavy" really means! You'll never need to worry about the way you've mounted your tom, Doc!
