Here's how to go fast... practice a lot with big fat marching snare sticks. Then get yourself some smaller thin sticks like a 747 or even a 420 promark and it'll feel like feathers. But to help build speed play with big fat heavy slow sticks.

Their are two schools of thought on sticks and speed. Practice with heavy sticks, switch to light sticks OR any stick that is comfortable, practice with it and play with it. I think speed comes with you just developing your own technique of playing and in time speed follows.

French grip is what I got used to, and I've learned to play fast with it. I couldn't go fast with german grip. I use promark 7a wood tip.

Ultimately, it's not the sticks as much as it is putting the practice in to acquire speed. That said, some believe that the design of the drumsticks does help. Here's one example of something that Drum Bum carries where it is designed with that in mind: http://store.drumbum.com/skuSTK-39.html

    Sticks don't matter. Practice matters.

I've noticed that my speed is noticabley better (although still not that fast) during the third and fourth sets of a 4hr gig. I guess it takes me 2hrs to warm up, LOL.

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

+1. Best way to strengthen grip, is to play with heavier sticks that you're not used to. Over time your grip will adjust to handle the difficulty level of using this thickness, and you'll be stronger with any stick that's thinner. Anything else that strengthens grip will assist, as well.

My first impression after switching from a heavier to lighter stick is,"Yes! I found a terrific drumming secret!"(for about 30 seconds....) I've tried warming up with a heavier stick and then playing with a lighter stick and it doesn't work for me. My 5A's are easier to grip and provide more bounce than Jazz or 7A's, so the 5A's still win even if they weigh more.

Carmine Appice will tell you, his Carmine Appice Regal Tip model, which it think was a 5A with a ball cut into the butt end. They are a pretty quick stick, too light and wimpy for my taste though.

Also agree. I try to warm up and get my hands moving before I go on but for sure during the second set I feel I do best.
