sub'd. I have a 14" tom I might like to try to "convert" to something like a marching snare.
searched the forums but couldnt find anything. if there is a thread , please point me to it.
im looking to convert my extra 10" tom to a snare. the thing is i cant seem to find any hoops of the appropriate size. i found the heads and wires. can anyone point me to a website that sells them? or will i have to mod the existing hoops?
thanks everyone!

May this be the best day you ever had and the worst you ever will. Trinity House Mudslinger.
Pm sent. A few diy suppliers have them, but you could also get your hands on a 10" snare from Pdp(popcorn snare) or Pearl(firecracker, m80) to use for parts if you want. Buying the snare will be more expensive, but you'll have another drum for the collection if you ever need versatility.

yeah PDP popcorn snare is relatively cheap. I got mine for $65
that site was just what i needed thank you!
the tom was just lying around, gathering dust,so why not haha
my next question would be should i cut a snare bed into it? im thinking i should but i dont know how wide etcetc.
If you are making it on the cheap,
then use the exisiting rims and drill 2 holes in each end of the reso rim for snare cords.
Beds should be as wide as the snare wires being used and then tapered back to 0 from there about 1 1/4 inches on each side. Cut 1/8-3/16 inches deep.

thanks so much for the info green man! the rims that areon it are on the rusty side so im not opposed to just replacing them.
ill post pics once i start working on it.
I believe drumfactorydirect has both rims for a 10.
Top and reso with gates.
How many lugs around the drum so you get the proper hole layout in your new rims.
10" drum..........4 lugs.....6 lugs?
Also rims come in 1.6 mm and 2.3 mm.
I usually use a 2.3 (stiffer) for snares as it drys out the ring getting closer to a die-cast
which really dries out a snare.
Fun Little Snare, cool
its a 6 lug green man.
i just ordered two new rims 2.3mm along with a simple [link removed. See forum rules. - Tom] and buttplate. a puresound 16 strand wire rounds out the order.
would a wood file or a wood rasp be best for cutting the snare beds?
might as well do that while i wait for my order to arrive.
heres a pic
Square the drum and true the edges first.
Then mark out for beds.
A rasp will work for basic shape.
Then finish off with a file then sandpaper.
Seal edges with lacquer or wax.
