not a sabian, but my mate has a zildjian one and its nice as can be. it makes for some nice efects.
Cymbals with Holes!
Sat in on a friend of mine's drumkit the other night. He had one of those Sabian cymbals with holes in it. It actually sounded pretty good! Had almost a chinese kind of sound. I was diggin' it. Any of you guys ever play those?

Yeah O zones. Apparently they were developed to sound like white noise.
I can't really hear it much in them, but I dig it too, unique sound indeed.
Do they project well? I'd imagine with less surface area, there would also be less vibration. Do you think that it's just a crazy designer cymbal that will die out in a few years?

White noise? I'm not familiar. I've seen the O-Zones before and hit them, but never payed much attention to their significance

never played em on a kit. just on the rack at the store. it was the hhx evolution series ozone. i dont think i would have much use for it. cool cymbal tho.

Cymbals with holes around their perimeters were designed that way to accommodate rivets for making the "sizzle" sound. Many were shipped from the factory to the consumer market with the holes and with the rivets, and some arrived to you after the rivets had been removed. Main reason: rivets in cymbals get annoying very quickly.
Anyone who's had a riveted cymbal, or has lived with anyone who's had a riveted cymbal for any length of time, knows this.
No, I still won't play Wipe Out.
After further review, I realized that drummer may have been referring to the cymbals with the big holes in them.
To that, I can only suggest that those holes are gimmicks with no real function.

what my local guitar center likes to do with the sabian hhx evolution ozones actually sounds really good....
they will take a 14" china cymbal mounted upside down (as compared to a standard crash)
they will then put a 10" sabian ozone stacked right on top of the inverted china.
then you smack the two and get a cool crunchy swishy sound.
i plan on doing the same but with a 16" hh sabian china and a 12" ozone.
if anybody has ever stacked a splash into a china before you know its a cool sound but sometimes it feels like too much air gets trapped btw the two cymbals. the large holes in the ozone cymbals are the perfect remedy for this. you get a great effect.
