I started with a Mapex M. That got traded in for a Mapex Pro-M. The Pro-M got traded in for a Saturn. I'm sensing a theme here.

Until two years ago, I only had two drum sets over a forty year period:
1960s: MIJ Red sparkle 5 piece club date, one up two down
1971: Ludwig Downbeat Sky Blue Pearl 6 piece, two up two down

Then I joined two bands and didn't want to lug drums around, so i bought two sets to leave at the rehearsal spaces:
Sonor Select Force 3005 All Maple 5 piece, two up one down
PDL Birch Bop Kit 4 piece, after replacing the heads, it sounds pretty darned good!

    Over the years, my sets were;

    1) Kents--White Pearl--20" 13" 16" 5" snare. 1956 -'61-'63.

    2) Ludwigs--Black Pearl--22" 13" 16" 16" 5 1/2" Supra. (the 2nd FT might have been 18") This set was either $325 or $350 complete in 1961.

    3) Lugwigs--Black Pearl--24" 13" 16" 18" 5 1/2" Supra. Bought around 1964 for $450 complete.

    4) Ludwigs--Black--24" 14" 16" 18". It was just a shell pack for $550 at Sam Ash. Bought in 1971. It's the set I kept after I retired and use in my videos (they have been re-wrapped) The rest of the drums are add-ons bought after I retired.

    5) Rogers--White Pearl--24" 13" 16" 18" 5" Dyna-Sonic. Bought used from a music store in south Jersey for $600 complete in 1973. They were never used in a gig. They stayed in our rehearsal room in Manhattan. Didn't like the Swiv-O-Matic pedal and used a Speed King with it.

    6) Slingerland--White Pearl-- Buddy Rich set. Went into a music store for some odds and ends. They were set up in the middle of the store with a velvet rope around them and they were beautiful. Bargained with the owner and got them for $650 or $700 complete with the White Pearl seat, plus another $300 or so for cases. That was in 1975-6.

    7) Pearl Exports--Prizm Blue--2- 22x20 BD 10" 12" 13" 14"-14"FT and 16" FT. None of the pics or videos with them do the wrap justice. Hard to say what I paid for them as I bought 2 sets at a estate sale about 3 months after I moved here for $500.

Snare Drums--In my playing days, I had 4 Black Beauty Super Sensitives and 5 Supras. I like metal snares, what can I say.

Now I own 2 Black Beauty SS's. 1 BB and a Supra is stored at my brothers house, and here I have a BB SS, a Black Magic, a Acrolite, a Dyna-Sonic and the Pearl snare.

That's it for me, I have no need for anything else.

I've only been playing for 4 years, so my list is pretty short---my first kit was a $50 Groove Percussion that I bought off Craigslist---I spent a year upgrading the hardware, and buying cymbals---my next kit was supposed to be a sweet older set of Pearl Exports, but when I went to pick them up the guy's ex had slashed the heads, and taken them for a dip in the pool He said I could have them if I helped him fish them out. The shells were FUBAR, but I used the lugs on my GPs (the stock ones were breaking off) Emperors over Ambassadors, and a PS3 on the bass with a flame reso---these are some great drums for very little money, and they live in my studio now as my recording kit!

My second kit was another GP ($40 off Craigslist) I bought hardware and cymbals, and gave it to my grandson for his 8th birthday!

    That's easy

A little toy set with paper heads I got one year for Christmas...loved them

Graduated to...A blue sparkle MIJ nameless set (no badges), bought at second hand shop for $100, played until I started making the big bucks pumping gas!

Black Ludwig Vistalites that I bought one piece at a time by mail order (long before online shopping) 24, 13, 16 and a supraphonic snare which I still own. This was mid to late 70's.

Was playing on the road in a country rock band, travelled all over Canada and parts of US. Somewhere in the middle of that, I started seeing lot's of fellow bar band guys playing Gretsch drums. I think Gretsch was making somewhat of a comeback around then, after the Baldwin mismanagement phase. I was so over taken by the sound and looks, I decided to take the leap. I chose the natural maple for the down home rustic country look. This was early 1983 when I took delivery from Toronto drum and percussion on King St.

Still playing them with no serious consideration of going to anything else.

    all the best...

Kit #3 is a 2006 Mapex in Peakock Swirl ($200 off Craigslist) I bought a Tama throne, Pearl kick pedal/hi-hat stand, PDP cymbal stands, and Meinl, Zildjian, Wuhan cymbals to complete the package---this is my practice kit for now, and I plan to use it for gigs if I get to that point---looks great under the lights, and sounds amazing too!
