1 Pearl, Ludwig, 3 TKO's, 1 Gammon and my latest Mapex Voyager. Yes, i've played cheap sets and good sets, I'm not too drum picky, I just like to bang.

    Ash, Bish, pretty close.

After only two years drumming, I have already had 4 kits! Just took a while to find the ones I liked.

1- Mapex V series 5 piece kit. Just a beginner set, but REALLY made well, and the ones I got were in PERFECT condition. not a scratch on them! After a lot of head choices and learning about tuning, I finally got a good sound out of them, but I really had my heart set on a 2 up, 2 down kit. I couldn't find a 14" tom for them anywhere, so i sold them (big mistake!, still regret it) and bought....

2- Gretsch Catalina Ash 6 piece. Got the 2 up 2 down I wanted, and at a great price! But the sizes were all too small (8. 10. 12. 14) I really missed the big BOOM of the 16" FT. The snare was GARBAGE (but I had others by this time), and no matter what head combos I tried, I HATED the sound of those things. I even took them all the way down to bare shells, cleaned and sanded the interiors and bearing edges, treated them with several coats of Tung Oil, polished the hardware, etc. NOTHING worked, finally traded them straight up for ......

3 - late '90's Pearl Export 6 piece (long lugs). These looked better in the CL pic than they did in person, but I took them anyway. (big mistake) They sounded OK (maybe!) except the 10" tom was DEAD! I mean really dead! Couldn't get sustain out of that thing for anything. Bass drum had some issues, too. I think mostly from the metal rings. I learned a lot about what NOT to look for when searching for a secondhand kit from those Pearls. Incidentally, I now have a real aversion to any Pearl or Gretsch kits, mostly because of those two, but I also have tried others out new in stores, and they always sound terrible to me, especially if played next to a TAMA or PDP kit. I can't find a Gretsch snare i like the sound of either, and I mean, I have LOOKED! Anyway, Sold that a used some xmas $$ to buy.....

4 - Yamaha Stage Custom 5 piece. FINALLY! 2 up, 2 down, just the sizes and depths I want. They all tune up great, first set of heads I tried were right, bass sounds fantastic. I love this kit! I paid a bit too much, i think, but the guy took excellent care of them (about 20 years old), and I love them sooo much, I ain't complaining. I'll stick with these for a while.

This list is subject to change as my memory wavers in and out of age-induced accuracy, but:

    - 1965 Kent 4-piece, white marine pearl (new, Christmas present from my parents)

    - 1975 Ludwig Classic 4-piece, white marine pearl, bought new

    - 1964 Ludwig Classic 4-piece, champagne sparkle, used

    - 19?? CB700 7-piece Mark IV, wris****ch lugs, made by Pearl, wine red, new

    - 19?? Pearl Export 5-piece, new, the only kit I've ever owned that I just did not like

    - 19?? Yamaha Stage Custom 5-piece, new, not inspiring at all

    - 19?? Yamaha Recording Custom 6-piece, YESS, tobacco burst, new (Amazing!)

    - 19?? Yamaha Maple Custom 5-piece, YESS, natural, used (Amazing!)

    - 20?? Mapex Saturn Pro 6-piece, natural, new (not inspiring then; new ones are great)

    - 2001 (I think) Pacific CX Maple 7-piece, new, white onyx, without doubt, one of the best-sounding kits I've owned. Still have it today.

I like the tom sound better on the DW, kick drum is better on Peavey. As for snares; they all sound good, just different.

I haven't tried recording the Peavey yet, so I can't say which records best.

My first kit was an entry level Yamaha power road.
    Then I bought a 80s-90s vintage Tama e-kit.
After that I bought a Remo Encore kit with quick release lugs for easy head changes
I scored a '78 Smoke colored Ludwig Vistalite
Oh, I almost forgot about a pair of LP Conga... (they were kinda fun)
I got another e-kit, the Yamaha DTXpress (first gen)
My last kit was/is my Gretsch Catalina Maple.

Then there's just snares, an old 6x14 steel Premier & a 3 x 13 steel Ludwig piccolo. I kept the 8 x 14 acousticon Remo snare from when I sold that kit, and the matching Gretsch to my cat maples.

I still have the Yamaha e-kit & the Gretsch, (for now) I've been gassing for some D-Dubs.

We went to GC to get a music book for my youngest daughter for school. I saw some DW Design series in tobacco that were sexy. The mrs said I had to sell the gretsch first as a joke and I said OK.

    She was like...
    Kevin
DW Performance series - Gun Metal Metallic Lacquer
    24/12/16 6.5x14
    Sabian AA/AAX hi-hats & crashes
    Sabian HHX Evolution ride

    Drummers can be very tempomental.....

I haven't gone through too many kits.

    1) My "starter kit" was a Maxwin concert tom kit circa 1970s.
    2) My next kit was a "return to drumming" Yamaha Stage Custom Birch.
    3) My current kit is my "spent too much time on Drum Chat looking at kits" DW Performance Series.

Started off on small kid-sized kit with a bassdrum, tom, snare (-ish) and one cymbal. That kit was in green pearl.

Next, I had a gold/bronze Shiro with the same configuration only slightly bigger. My dad got me a hihat later on. Think the hihat-cymbals were 15" or 16".

After that, I got my first "real" kit. A Jet Black
Tama Swingstar from -83/84 (still have it). Two toms, one floor, snare and kick. Hihat and two 18" crash rides.

Went on to a 1990's Pearl Export in Bright red. Same config but some more cymbals.
Oh, and a Tama ProBeat twin double pedal with wood beaters. I still use that pedal.

Had a long break from the drums and when I finally picked up the sticks again I bought a White sparkle doublebass Sonor 3007. Two kicks, two toms, two floors and a snare. And a whole bunch of Z-customs. Sold it after a couple of years since it only collected dust in my parents basement. I don't really miss the drums but I'd like to have the cymbals back. Especially the ride. A Z-custom 22" Power ride that sounded so bleepin' awesome.

Now, I have a doublebass, one up two down EAST all maple kit. Slowly increasing the number of Zultan cymbals around the kit.

Sometime in 1990, I bought a Tama Rockstar birch snare that I still use. It's a 14"x8" and I love it.
And, I recently (last week) ordered a custom snaredrum in red acryl. Also a 14"x8". What can I say? I like deep snares

'93 Tama Rockstar 8-pc in a really cool Ocean Blue color. Loved that color.
    '12 Gretsch Catalina Maple 7-pc.
'05 Mapex V jazz kit. 18"kick, 8-10 toms with 12" and 14" floor toms. Cool little kit that I turned into my practice E-kit. 4 toms but still nice and compact.
    '13 Gretsch Renown 6-pc, 8-10-12-16
