    Default Restoring old drum hardware

Hey just looking for advice. Have any of you ever had your hardware powdered coated or re chromed? If I were to powder coat the lugs/bolts/hoops on an old vintage set wouldn't that devalue the kit. Powdered coat would certainly jack up the treads lol..

I use steel wool when I can but it can only do so much,Is re chroming better than powdered coating cheaper and if it's even worth doing to an old Rogers/slingerland/ludwig kit. Or do you clean up an old kit and leave it at that.

I know just from looking up on ebay trying to find old parts for a kit that it can get expensive really quick and I didn't really want to mixmatch parts. But how do you go about it? thanks

Re-chrome, for sure. I don't think new chrome would devalue a kit one cent since you are replacing what was originally there, and should look exactly as it did when new. Powder coating just was not used on early kits, so that would devalue the kit. When it comes to threads, you will be removing the swivel nuts from the lug casings, and the chrome shop can plug off any other threads that did not have original plating. Good luck, and how about some before and after pictures?

Yeah that's how I'm leaning too.. I'm still saving for the kit in mind and I can see it being a while before I have enough money to buy all it's going to need.. But for a while I was thinking powder coating could look cool. But then if it drastically devalues the kit I'd feel like a fool for doing it.
On a newer kit I could see going with the powder coat if it needs it. But yeah once I get started I'll upload some picture. I did buy an 8" tom for the CX kit and I'm going to rewrap it as well so it will match.

So, what are you intending to do exactly? Piecing a kit together? What brand and age are you shooting for?

I hope the word never gets around about how good the old made-in-Mexico Pacific CX kits are. Right now, they are still cheap. I was reading some DW brochures from the early 2000s and they pointed out that the CX kits were made from the same hard rock maple used by DW on their US made kits. I assume that must be true of the LX lacquered kits, as well, but can't say for sure. I would love to find one of the LXE series kits with the exotic finishes. I have never seen one for sale anywhere, not even on ebay. I did a "sold" search on ebay - nothing there, even.

There are several kits I'm looking at. But right now it's up in the air and I don't really want to show my hand lol. but yeah it's cool, really cool what I have in mind.

On the CX I've not regretted buying it. In fact I saw a CX kit different wrap on CL a month ago for only 200.00! That didn't last long. I started to buy it. and I would of it had matched my kit.

But finding that 16" floor tom is really hard to find and when you do they are not cheap. I could see re wrapping a totally different drum to match if it sounded good. to go with it. the 8" is a Pdp Concept maple and it sounds fine just different lugs and a generic white wrap that needs to go away.

re chroming or just chroming something first time is insanely expensive. At least from some quotes i got from a couple of shops. I was going to do some but had to wait because of the cost.

Guess he couldn't afford it so he had to put the kit up for sale hehe kind of looks like it was gold plated at one time..I saw that tour in Dallas was like my 2nd concert.. Crue opened the show "shout at the devil" tour. reunion arena.. like in 84 I believe..saw Van Halen later that year (1984) same place..that was a good show..Michael would deliberately throw his bass on the ground and and the shock was like an earthquake!
