It sounds great. We played a pretty large festival last weekend and the sound guy came up to me after our set and said, "holy crap that gong drum thing you have sounds amazing!"

that's a great add! If this darn orange wasn't so hard to find in the first place I would love to also build one myself.
I've never heard of a gong drum. Guess I better get with the program, lol.

Nice job, looks really sturdy.
I think it sounds great how it is. That one looks silly.

Drum Craft has been making them since they started. You can buy them as add ons with your kit. . . . only if you live in S. America/Europe or down under. . . .I guess that doesn't help me here.

Proudly playing:
Doc Sweeney Drums
A bunch of snares
A bunch of cymbals
Off-Set double pedals
I think I love to play the drums simply because you get to hit 'em!!!
Actually, if you want to stay true to the original gong drum concept (originated in the late 1970s by Tama), the oversized head is the way it's supposed to be. The original idea was to offer a tympani-like sound in drum set format. I can remember seeing a few of them that actually used a tympani style footpedal to allow pitch adjustment. (Yamaha and several other companies used to offer footpedal-adjustable floor toms to the same effect.) A google search turns up many pictures of the original, along with current offerings.

What exactly does one do with a drum like that?
all the best...
Why not just get a small kettle drum?
all the best...
I suppose you are right. but since it has a Remo Ambassador on it, it sounds like a big wide open tom. Not a kick drum.
