    Default Aquarian Super 2 Heads

After getting used to the attributes on their bass heads, I'm interested in a set of these Aquarian Super 2 batter heads for my toms.
Anyone here using these now ?
What did you find as a good compliment for the reso side ?

Aquarian heads are good Ricardo regardless which one you choose. I have experience only with the single ply Coated Z100 on one of my snare and it work great for that snare where other heads didn't. I also use the Bass drum Aquarian reso 2 ply not sure if it is called a Super 2 or not but love it.

I have switched out the stock Pork Pie Remo UT (Taiwan) heads on my 24" Dark Cherry Squealer kit with Super II coated batter/Classic Clear reso. I really like this combo. The Super II coated reminds me of Evans G2 coated/G1 clear combo I had on my Gretsch kits. The Classic Clears to me are like clear Ambass which are 10mil single ply heads.

I use the Super 2 clear heads. I have also used the coated Super 2 heads. Went with classic clear on the reso side and love the sound.

I'm afraid I've neglected Aquarian heads for many years now. When they were first introduced to the market, I outfitted a drum set of mine with all Aquarian heads - and they sucked. I'm glad to hear that they've evolved into a good quality head after all this time. I suppose if I'm to retain my title as "The Man Who Thinks He Knows Everything" I may buy one to try on a tom batter so I can make a fresh judgement on them. Thanks for posting the info, guys.

I've got Super 2's on my 10 and 12. I think they are great, especially the 10. I have Performance 2's on the floors, 14 and 16. Mine are clear, I'd like to try coated too.

I use the Super 2's with the Studio X ring built in on my Tama Silverstar rock kit... it sports 13", 16" and 18" toms. It adds just a touch of control but still has enough of that big fat open sound

I put coated Super-2's on my Exports. I really like the way they tune up. They definitely sound different......more open and brighter.....than Emperors. My only complaint is they seem to have a fairly narrow tuning range. If I try to tune them as loose as I did the old clear Pinstripes, I get that "flappy plastic" sound. If I go anything beyond medium-tight, they sound choked. It may be the old shells on the Export, I don't know. I figured I'll try them on my new PDP kit.

    Hello Dave :

In your opinion and insight, does the Studio X ring work like adding moon gel ?
    Does it dampen/control overtones ?
Is it adjustable (like SKII) ?

Super 2's are a multi-sound head, made in different versions(clear, coated, power dot, studio x ring) so i'm going to review the ones with the studio rings packed in:

Essentially they're an ''in-betweener'' design. In terms of how damped they sound, they're in between a response 2(emperor/g2) and a performance 2(pinstripe/hydraulic). They're for players who want to control the tone, but don't quite want it to be to the point of a thud, like you get with hydras. A jack of all trades 2 ply head, where balance is key. In the 1 ply world, the equivelant design for Aquarian would be their studio-x heads.

Just keep in mind that when you buy a head with coating on it, you're adding a form of dampening to the head you choose. If it's a pre-damped design like super 2 with the rings in it, be aware that there won't be any way for you to get any less dampened of a sound. They're a set it and forget it head, not the kind you tweak with moongels or the like depending on what you're playing. So be very sure of the sound you're after before investing.

Using one of those coupons we seem to get every other day, I ordered Aquarian Super 2 w/ SX rings for my toms.
I plan (for now) to keep the clear Ambos on the reso side.
I suspect they will be similar to what I am now using (Emps w/ Zero Rings) but I'm hoping they might be better.
I suspect the guys at the main console will like them because they are controlled.

I'll report back when I have had some time with the new heads............

I know whenever an Aquarian thread comes up I chime in but only because I like them so much. Been using them for many years now along with a Remo now and then but Aquarian is my first choice.

Bought a clear Response II 14" for a tom awhile back but it's been sitting in the box since. Last night I put it on my snare! Doesn't sound too bad really. It's cranked pretty tight so I'm getting a very pronounced high pop with zero overtones. I back off the wires a bit so it doesn't sound choked. Aquarian Performance snare side underneath

I'm looking forward to trying these out.
I just put new Emps on my toms 10 days ago but I got a bug and now I'm going to switch them out and play around with a new sound.

I've spent over $500 on two complete kit head swaps in the last month. The acrylic kit, I think I got it dialed in with Evans but the Pearl Exports have had new clear Emps as batters and now Pinstripes as batters and I'm still not satisfied. I may go Fiberskyns on top...

What coupons? I just listened to those super 2's w/x-ring and I agree they sound very good on their website. I may try them on my Yammies when the time comes. Looking forward to your review

Just yesterday I took the brand new coated Super 2's and EC Reso's off my Export kit. I liked it at first, but after listening to it in a live music context, I was not that impressed. I put the old clear pins back on and like the sound better. The more different heads and combos I try, the more I learn. These old Exports with power toms just don't seem to lend themselves well to anything but that '80s rock sound (deep thud). I think it's just a function of the depth, thickness and Birch/Luan construction. You may consider some Remo CS black dots.

Black dots are a head I wanted to like because of the look, so I got them and put em on. Wasn't too long before I noticed they had a decent sound in the middle, but a different one I didn't like outside of it. I've no issue with dampening, but I like it to be towards the ends, not in the playing area. I've never been the biggest fan of certain designs by Remo, they seem to have durability, inconsistency, or other quality control issues. So far my favorite performers are Aquarian and Attack, surprisingly. I liked Evans until they started price hiking and re-inventing tried and true designs that sounded better before. I dunno what those guys are thinking these days.
