Depending on the sound you are looking for and as long as you don't use brushes...
a clear center black or white dot would be a good choice.
I think it's the head Alex Van Halen uses, too.

My favourite is an Aquarian coated with a dot underneath, can't remember the name of it, but it is similar to Remo coated black dot but it seems to retain its tone much longer than the Remo.

I've come to like the Evans EC Reverse Dot very much.
+1 You beat me to it. Keep in mind that heavier weight heads will choke a drum more than medium or lightweight heads, and that becomes more pronounced with the snare. Medium weight single ply coated is my choice for a snare batter (think Ambassador, PS3, G1 etc). Coated PS3 with a dot might be another good choice for you.

I've had good luck with Evans HD coated. Not the dry ones. I hit kind of hard. They are lasting a long time.
I loved my Aquarian carbon Kevlar marching snare drum head.
Ambassador X (my go-to snare batter head).
If you need a bit more durability...coated PS3 with reverse black dot.
Cheers.

I normally use Aquarian texture coated or response 2 coated for snare heads cause they sound so reliably good to me, but i'm partial to Attack's. Have always wanted to give them a try. Tried Remo and Evans, they're alright but I don't really wanna sound like everyone else.

The Rudiments
For the past 10 years I have used the Evans coated HD Dry. Find it suits all my needs & I hit hard. Very long lasting as well.
Evans Power Center Reverse Dot is my snare head of choice. Nice and resonant, yet tough. It is single ply so it may not be right for you. But I hit fairly hard, although I've backed off since I've learned better technique, and I've never broken one.
Thanks for alll the replies everyone!!
I have chosen...
i am getting the Evans coated HD Dry. it looks good and looks like it will last.
plus it has holes in which i guess is pretty quirky

I have that older Genera HD head love it on my Vintage steel Slingerland snare.
