    Default Wood vs Metal snare

What's your preference, the musical ring of a metal snare or the warm, woody sound of a wood snare? You're not allowed to be all squishy and say "it depends on what type of music you're playing". Take a stance - which do you prefer?

    But.....

It does depend on the situation.

Sometimes I like blondes.....sometimes I like brunettes. Every once in a while (when inebriated) I liked red heads.

    Of course...I married a blond.

    So.....Maple.

I haven't played a large variety of snares, but from my experience with birch, maple and metal, I think if I had to pick one, I'd go with my Ludwig Acrolite.

Metal snares cause I like the snap, crackle pop that I do not get from my maple snare.

I have both Brass & Maple 8" deep Pearl Free Floating snares. Have to say the Brass is far better.

Metal .I've had a few very good wood snares but I always go back to the metal snares . My favorite at the moment is the Pearl Chad Smith signature snare . I would love a Supraphonic but I can't bring myself to pay that much for one now .

    Eddie . . . Edward,

I thought you were going the squishy route until you took the safe route and let your wife make the decision. I acknowledge your wisdom.

lol It's posted somewhere on this forum....

My wife finally put me on a NO BUY list for snares some time ago (after I got the Pearl Power Piccolo).

Since then....I've purchased only one more snare. But it came with a kit...and she never said I couldn't get another kit! (I have 8)

This. The one definitive statement I've definitely learned to definitely definitively make is never to make a definitive statement. And I say that definitively. Definitely. Defined.

My every day go to snare is a 1960's Ludwig. I do like the sound of the metal but I am also considering making a wood picolo snare.

From the audience side I prefer the sound of metal snares (99% of bands I see are playing rock), from the throne I'm not so keen on them and wooden shells seem much easier on the ear.
