Help with reading these rests in these ostinatos

I got a book on independence and I am having trouble reading and counting these ostinatos correctly. My hope is that I can work on my reading and independence at the same time because I really want to get good at reading.
Here are a few descriptions of what I am to count / read correctly.

A. starts with a 16th note rest, one 16th note, one 8th note rest. (not sure how to count that since it is only displaying 3 not values.)

B. starts with an 8th note rest, one 8th note. (Is this just upbeats counting the "and" and resting on the numbers? Is this just repeated since there are only 2 note values?)

C. starts with a 16th note rest, one 16th note, 16th note rest, one 16th note. (is this only playing the "e's" and "a's?")

Sorry if this is a dumb question. It's weird; I can read a basic bar of music ok, but these rests in these small ostinato patterns are throwing me off for some reason. Thanks in advance for any help.

Think of each phrase as a four-count pattern of 16th notes :

A = rest on one; note on two; rest on three & nothing on four.

B = rest on one; nothing on two; note on three; nothing on four (because the one 8th note/rest equals two 16th notes/rests).

C = rest on one; note on two; rest on three; note on four.

I think I get it.

so for A it's; rest on one, play the "e", rest on "and" "a"?

for B it's; rest one one, play the "and", rest on two play the "and" etc.?

for c I'm just playing the "e" and "a" and resting on "1" and "and"?
