    Cool OT : band news

    Hi,
Some of you might have read in the shout box about our disaster gig?
If you missed it this is what happened ...
We were meant to perform last but one at a rock night.
The performers were all aged from about 9 to 20yrs and there were about 350-300 people watching.
Long story short , our new bend member drank too much, got loud and a bit lairy, which got us all pulled, 20 mins before our set :|
We left, and saw him outside punching walls!?!
And my mum told him what a stupid thing he had done letting us all down, especially himself...
We never heard from him till we messaged about practise then He said he can't as he's fractured his hand(what a surprise) and is in a cast.
We are going to give him one more chance
    What do you guys think?

So sorry to hear that. Definitely some ground rules for this new band member for the future are in order. I hope he can wise up and be a productive member of the band and learn what is and what is not acceptable behavior for your band. Sadly you might start thinking about the next plan of action if he doesn't turn it around. What is the legal drinking age in the UK?

Agreed . Give him one more chance to turn it around . But only one . Sometimes you need that slap in the face to straighten you out . He just got his . If that didn't work ..move on . There are other people who would gladly take his place .
Good luck , I hope it works out .

Give him a second chance. If he doesn't get his act together then kick him from the band.

My first thought was; your band might have got pulled from the lineup, but if he was that drunk, he most likely would have been an embarrassment on stage. At least this way, the 350 people didn't see him on stage.
My second thought was; the kid sounds too immature to be a productive member. 1) drinking (at all) at an important event, (2) getting stupid when he drinks, (3) can't control his anger. I can't say that he definitely has a problem.....he acts like a lot of 20yr old guys I know. Heck, I acted the same way on occasion when I was 20. He just needs to do some growing up.

On the bright side, you've gained some publicity. British bands have been known to be an unruly lot...no?

I'd boot him now. I've been in bands where alcohol or substance abuse got in the way of the band. Those people never change. If he did it once, he'll probably do it again.

We invited him to band practise, he said he couldn't come, his right hand is in a cast, well, we all know what happened there...
The guys are willing to give him a second chance, and it is his 19 th birthday today, you never know he might have grown up a bit..

Bridie, if he was a jerk a couple of weeks ago, turning 19 isn't going to make him grow up.

My singer can drink most men under the table..One of the few women I know who can drink a bunch of whiskey and not get stupid..still I want her to stop altogether and she's young & crazy like a wild horse. But she's coming out of it I just need to be patient and in the end I think I really lucked out finding her. Because she's really got it all. Some singers spend all kinds of money on high end gear, ribbon mics. But she sounds great on a radioshack mr microphone. Like finding a young Patsy Cline!

The bass player in my last band (lead singer) got too drunk at a casino gig and began shouting out to the audience and started screaming the "Mrs. Robinson" song to his friend with the same name. I told him to move on and intro the next song and he blew a gasket on stage and turned around and cursed me out in front of the crowded dance floor. I walked after the gig and never looked back.

You don't need this 19 year old drunk who blew the gig for you guys. So his hands in a cast and he can't sing? Really?? Time to move on.

Not all drunks are gig killers . The guitar player in the band I currently play in is a alcoholic . Man can he solo ! He gets the crowd going . And yes he is lit ! But he's the kind of drunk that you can deal with . He puts his arm around you , he compliments everyone , he dances with the crowd during the breaks , he laughs a lot and believe it or not people like to be around him . And the guy is 60 years old . He isn't going to change . He doesn't drive , he has no car . And we have never had to call off a gig because of his drinking .
I'm not saying that you should excuse your guy because he got drunk . I just wanted to say that I have worked with MANY a drunk and rarely have I encountered one who was detrimental to the gig . That's because by the time I came around all those mean drunks had been filtered out !
    Boy...the stories I could tell....

I appreciate all your advice, to me he is a pain, he is a phenomenal guitarist, even when he's had a drink, but I don't like that he has to have so much to drink to perform .
The other guys will have a pint before a gig, and have never shown themselves up or been drunk , which is important as I am 15 and my Mum is always there and they respect that.
It annoyed me that he was drunk and ruined the gig, but also that he let us down and tried arguing he was sober with my Mum, my Mum just told him, 'go home! You're DRUNK!
She had helped get us the gig, there were her work colleagues there and kids from her school and everything.
She said since she would let us decide what to do
I know he feels bad, and I am glad, if he doesn't say sorry to my Mum he will be out anyway, we can always be a 3 piece :D

You have 57-58,000,000 people living in a area about the size of my backyard. I'm pretty sure that there is another good guitarist out there somewhere.

Yup . There is someone out there who would LOVE to have the gig .
You just have to sift through the bunch to find that person.
Good luck . Being in a band can be a heck of a ride with both ups and downs . You've experienced some already !

that's true, good experience for you, if you've all agreed to give him another chance that's great, that shows some maturity on your part, we have a 1 pint limit at gigs, we're all happy with that, we'd never let one another down by doing something like that, Your going places anyway so just enjoy the ride until it's time for you to move on.

    Cheers Mark
