You could keep the P85 and repair it in case you decide to sell the snare and put it in but a Truck throw might just net a little more cash.
    Another great idea! Thanks topdog63!

I had the exact same thing happen to the P85 on my BLackrolite. And I did the same thing, I replaced it with a P86. Direct bolt on, and a much better throw-off. You'll be happy with it.

OOPS! Correction: the part you need is called an "E clip," not a "C clip" as I noted. Getting old.

I bet you need to be good at crafting to change a strainer.

No, just two screws and two washers.

Thanks late, what specific screwdriver do I need?

Probably a phillips head. It's not difficult at all.

Phew, the result of a little research is that we don't have the P86 Strainer, instead we have a Gibraltar R4 Dunnett. will it work without drilling something too?

    Any experiences?

No drilling necessary just as long as the center to center is 2.5 inches, it will work:

I just ordered the P86 throw-off. I was missing the BB too much. The Gibraltar replacement looks good but from the pic, it looks a bit bulky?

Bulky? Sorry but I don't know what it means.
    My English vocabulary is small.

Glad it would work. It's the only replacement (except 2 trick strainers where I don't know if it's suitable or not) available in Germany.

The Philips Screw... Hopefully a German no-name screw would work with American screws.

Note the "Flat Head" screws on the picture I posted showing the 2.5" center to center distance for the mounting screws:

    Webster's Full Definition of: bulky

    bulk·i·er bulk·i·est
    1:
    a- having bulk
b- (1): large of its kind (2): corpulent

    —bulk·i·ness play \-kē-nəs\ noun

    Noted the distance.

Ok, so it'll work with every cross screwdriver (how we in Germany call them)?

You're welcome skills! Yes, very simple design and the mounting/removal is just as easy. The pic below shows all of the hardware and screws used to hold the strainer to the snare shell. The item in the upper right corner of the picture is the pin that holds the strainer lever in place. Missing is the "D" washer that holds the pin in place.

I just switched out my increasingly tetchy P85 on my 400 with the Dunnet and I'm very pleased with it. It might not be quite as elegant as the P85, but it's beautifully engineered and looks great. A new P85 would have cost nearly as much here in the UK and a P86 is virtually impossible to source. The supplied screws with the Dunnet are slightly too big for the original holes, but the original screws work fine. Go for it, Late!

Correct me if I'm wrong but is the Dunnett throw a quick disconnect? I have two different Dunnetts on a couple of my snares and if you want it to work right you have to cut and grind the bottom part of the snare wire window to work right. . . .just say'in. Check out my taye snare modification thread for pics.

Thanks for the tips guys! The P86 throw off arrived on my door step last night and I'm a little disappointed in a few things:

The P86 hardware came with only 4 screws and two thin washers

No big deal. I'll use the new screws and old washers? Wrong...the thread pitch of the new screws are different than the old washers. I'll use the old screws and washers then?

Second issue: The P86 makes contact with the snare bead. After a test fit, I found that it left scratches on the bead but after searching images on the internet for the same set up, I found they all make contact with the center bead?

The gap between the lug and center bead, in my opinion, leads me to believe it's there for a purpose?

    Conclusion:

I'm not too keen about the P86 making contact with the center bead but after a quick search, they all do that. My 5x14" BB is in mint condition after 6 years of ownership and I'm a little "guns shy" about bolting on a throw off that will leave permanent scratches on the center bead. The hardware provided with the P86 has me a little perplexed. Why not provide the locking washers/locking nut? Am I to assume Ludwig expects me to use the existing hardware?

    Your thoughts would be appreciated...thanks!
