After seeing the success that Spaz had with his project, I decided to do it as well. I had an extra tom sitting in my closet, a Tama Superstar 14x11 suspended tom. After a few failed attempts to sell it, I decided to make it a snare drum.

I cut the snare beds this morning. 3.5" wide by 1/8" deep.

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I used a small half round file and sandpaper.

Then I installed the DW Mag throw-off. I judged the distance to the edge just by looking at my other snares.

Now it's just a waiting game. Unfortunately, I have no tracking info on the bottom hoop. Hopefully soon!

I love that tom. It's going to be such a sexy snare! That fade looks killer

Great work on the snare bed. Glad you took my advice from my errors hahaha

Thanks! I love the fade too. I was thinking about doing a wrap over it to match the rest of the kit, but it's just too pretty to cover up.

The snare bed turned out pretty smooth. Thanks for being the guinea pig!

My bottom hoop just showed up at my front door, so I'm going to get to work putting it together!

It's done! It took me a bit to get the snare wires centered, but I got it all dialed in now. To describe this snare in one word: AMAZING! It's really loud, and it's got a great birch snap, with lots of body to it. I got it tuned low as far as snares go, but with the snares off, it's the perfect pitch above my 10" tom. This thing is going to be fun!

Hey Powertrip 240 that snare looks beautiful, you did that tom justice, by reviving it as a snare, are you going to use it as a main snare, a side snare, or just a very nice snare that you want to just have around.

Beautiful. I love the tom snares because when you tune a regular snare too low, you get nasty tones. When you tune one of these deep toms up, you can get the attack from a low tuning.

Thank you! I agree, it's much better served as a snare than as a piece of equipment taking up closet space. Right now, I have it set up as a side snare. It compliments my main snare beautifully. (My main snare is a Pork Pie BOB.) I guess depending on the song, it may be a main snare at times. Even if it sits on the shelf next to my other snares, I'm happy as hell with it.

I agree. This definitely still has the full sound and body of a tom, with the snap of a snare. I'm really digging it

Great work 240! Love the fade. Can't wait to see the video of this "monster". You gave me some confidence to do mine. So many projects on my list.

Thanks Late! It really wasn't bad at all. Just take your time with the snare bed, don't go too deep. 1/8" was perfect.

Wow, that's awesome. Makes me contemplate doing the same with an old 13" x 9" Ludwig Tom shell I have laying around collecting dust. That fade is stunning.

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

Thanks! Unfortunately, things have been really busy at home lately. I haven't had a whole lot of free time. But I'm going to try to get something recorded this week. I'm thinking of doing a side-by-side comparison with a very common snare, like my Acrolite. Kinda like the Pepsi challenge!
