Good question Tom. If I remember right, they were a cross between Herman's Hermits and the Dave Clark 5. Then they went to live on a mountain , got stoned and started writing about a walrus living in a yellow submarine.

You're right. They were something like a cross of Hermits and DC5. Two of the best band of the early British invasion. They embodied that refreshing Mersey sound. What set the Beatles apart was that they wrote their own songs.
