Default Gigging with a vintage kit.

Generally, I use my DWs for most gigs. I take good care of them, but like all of my kits, they are meant to play.

Recently I bought a set of 1965 Slingerlands very similar to my first "good" kit. I detailed the purchase in another thread.

Last night I took them out and used them for a gig, they sounded really good. Every time that I've gigged one of my Slingerland kits, my wife Jackie always comments on how much she likes the sound of them.

Other than the rail mount for the tom and the "L" arm cymbal mount for the ride, I used all modern hardware. I used my DW 9000 series pedal and hi-hat, 6000 series cymbal stands and snare stand. The other concession that I made was that I didn't use my regular gig rug. The old Slingierland kits were prone to creeping across the rugs, just like a lot of old kits were. Even with modern pedals with Velcro bottoms, the issue doesn't go away entirely. So, last night I used a Kases "Crash Pad" gig rug that has a barrier built in. The kit wasn't going anywhere.

I paired it up with my 5" deep Ludwig Black Beauty and miced it up with a bunch of Shure SM57s and an AKG D112, it really did sound incredible.

Without any further ado, here are some photos of the kit from last night's gig.

Ditto on the classy looking drum set..............love the vintage.

I HAVE GIGGED WITH "VINTAGE" DRUMS FOR 39 YEARS NOW.
I didn't know when I ordered USA shells in 1977 that they would be "vintage" or "classic" but they were bought because I knew they were quality drums.

I have played approximately 300 gigs with these drums and enjoyed (almost) every one.

I see no reason to change...............they sound better as they age.
Don't ever pause to play your choice in drums for any gig.

I can't believe those are 1965 Slingy shells.
They are in such great condition.
I would gig with those at every chance unless I thought there was a chance they would be damaged.

It doesn't hurt to break out the old kits once and awhile! I have a 1980 Slingerland that sounds great! (w/modifications) and out of my 6 kits that's my baby. That set looks really cool!

Beautiful old Slingerlands, and no hole in the bass drum.

Awesome! The angle of the bass Spurs tell the story. You could maybe take a set of old floor tom legs of the same diameter & bend the foot ends (last 10" or so ) at an angle that points more down and at a slightly forward angle.

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

I have an old 80's Yamaha 5000 series kit that I use. (Well.....truth be told I've not used it in a couple years because one of the kick drum hoops broke.)

I love it.....24 inch kick and a 8,10,12,14,16,18 inch toms. I only use a couple of the toms though.

Nice looking Slingerlands Mike! The stage looks like it could use a few hula dancers. Very cool!
