Sorry for so many posts but, 18x14 kick or 18x16?

I don't have much of any experience with an 18x16 kick, and I have a little with 18x14.

If I understand correctly, 18x14 gives a little more snap/attack, where 18x16 will give some more depth of sound, less snap/attack.

If I intend to use it primarily as a rock/fusion/jazz/latin, would you do 16 or 14 deep? Is deeper more versatile?

I thought the same thing until I put the right heads on my 22X14 Yamaha Live Custom. (oak)

It's way beastier than I would have thought.

Also, got owned by my 20X14 Starclassic B/B.

It too has a nice solid thump without a lot of overtones.

Both will sound nice and there may not be a world of a difference between the two, but more of a slight trade off between the two. I would go for the 18x16. With an 18" kick you can get some added depth punch with head choice.

I don't think you'd be able to hear a lot of difference between 14" & 16" depth. Probably notice a difference in feel more than sound. I love my 22x14, way more than my 22x18, but on a smaller 18" diameter, I'd probably go with the 16" depth. The 16x16 floor tom-to-bass conversions have much more beater bounce-back and take some getting used to. I think in this case (18" diameter) the added depth would be beneficial.

But sometimes the longer drums can look cool in the smaller sizes.
Trying both would be optimal of course.

The 16 may be more versatile. tighter for the jazz, and sill have a little more body for rock.

Unfortunately, I cant try either, or find any sound clips of said drum! but I ended up ordering the 18x16. If you know of a video with this kick, starclassic maple, I'd love to hear it.. I only ever see the 22" kick.

its true! I only have one chance to get it right. I don't think I can shave an 18x16 down to an 18x14... well I guess you could but i'm not sure if it would work well.

I love playing an 18 x 14. Just my two cents. Had one for about 30 years. Sound guys always raised an eyebrow when they first heard it mic'd. Really easy to EQ and control. Getting ready to re-wrap one and go back to that great feel and thud.

Now don't get me wrong, my bass drums are always 14" deep.
On the other hand, I remember seeing a Zickos acrylic kit in a London drum shop back in the 70s, and the big long bass drum had that huge tube look; I did feel a small tingle in my pant leg (that would have been trouser leg at the time).
